Replace crank bearings?

As you may or may not know i have an mxz with a bad engine. Anyways i may be buying a top end if i can get it cheap whether i use it with my bottom end or not im still going to buy it, if i get it for a good price. Well i dont know positively the bearings are bad but im assuming they are cuz the crank had rust on it. Im in the process of cleaning it all up. Can i replace the crank bearings and be good for a top end or no? I know nothing about cranks and bearings and what all needs to be done. If its going to cost a bunch ill just find another crank if i can.. How hard is it to replace the bearings and what all has to be done to the crank while doing that?

Any info would be great..

To be honest you can change the two outer most bearings on your own, but the interior bearings will be difficult to change with out a press and good knowledge of cranks. This is because the crank needs to be pressed apart and later pressed together and trued. Typically a trained professional is needed to repress a crank together and true it.

If i replace any bearings is it pretty much a must that i replace all bearings? Bearings arent too much right? I checked some out on some site i found on google and they were less than 10 a piece like around 7 bucks but how many are there total?

You don't need to change them all. If I remember correctly there are 6 bearings on that crank, correct me if I'm wrong.

Well ill check it out and see if i can have someone else check them out for me that knows more about them than me.. In case i do have to have the inside ones replaced do you know about how much that will cost? Just the cost to have it done not the price for bearings..

Also do you know any good places to look online for the bearings? I want to check some out, the place i looked didnt seem like a very known place. I tried parts unlimited but i didnt see any bearings for the mxz maybe i just missed it i dont know..

Can you give me an idea what a whole top end is worth? Comes with both cylinders, both pistons, and the head.. Is it worth over 100 atleast im guessing? What is the max price a whole used top end for a 583 is worth in your opinion? It was off a running engine and had 170 psi and 166 psi on a warm engine? Is that good or what?

Assuming all the bearings are the same, take one of them to your local parts store, (Napa, autozone, whatever) and they will match it up to one that they can get for you. Probably be about $10-$15ea, but it'll be cheaper if you buy a sleeve of 10 of them.

your gonna have to be careful about what you get, but the Ebay route might be cheaper

Ive been looking at that bottom end in the link.. That is actually where im looking to get the top end haha..

westman995 04-28-2008 08:49 PM

Well i didnt win the auction for the top end.. I was hoping i could get it decently cheap but some bastard bid over 100 haha.. The same person also bought bottom end from the same engine. 3 out of his 5 total feedback are negatives so maybe he wont pay and it will get relisted haha..

westman995 04-29-2008 07:05 PM

Alright well the guy didnt pay or something and the seller sent me a second chance offer for the complete top end. Buy it now for 116 plus about 25 for shipping. I cant decide if i should buy it now. That sounds really cheap for a good complete top end.. But i know i need all new bearings in the crank before i can use it.. I cant decide what to do! haha
