71 Panther
4 Attachment(s)
Here's what I have been working on when I have time.

71 axile flow Panther 399, or maybe a 72

You should have seen all the oil, leaves inside. actually I think all that oil helped preserve the fininsh. LOL
Should have taken thes pics when the skis where still Yellow.
The skid has hardly any slides left, and the one rear idle wheel is missing the rubber, lots of broken cleats. carb is soaking, should be fun putting it back together, first try at a Tilly carb...

but oh well, it was a $100, just gonna be a trail rider.

How's the plating of the cyls. Thise years had a bad habit of the chrome flaking off.
I had one and could not find 399 cyls to replace them with, so I changed it to a 440.
Just needed pistons and jugs to do the job.

SnowAttitude 11-17-2008 07:11 AM

^^^^^It runs, OK it fires when squirting gas in it. LOL

havent looked yet, thanks for the tip. Maybe I shouldnt look.?

Ibreakstuff 11-17-2008 09:59 AM

Nice job for $100! That doesn't look like a Suzuki engine in it, did they use someone else that early? Looks like a JLO/Rockwell in fact.

SnowAttitude 11-17-2008 05:47 PM

^^^Yep thats what it is a JLO/Rockwell
Most had the Kawi in them, then they started to switch to the Suzuki.

The seat is in Good shape also, the most $$$$ part of a sled.

Hopefully over Turkey day weekend will get some time on getting done.

Took the tank in to get cleaned, see how that turns out???

OCR 11-18-2008 01:23 PM

Good, the JLO engines did not have the flaking problem that the Kawi engines did.

SnowAttitude 11-19-2008 07:15 AM

I knew the Kawi had a center seal problem, never heard of the flacking.

Took the tank in to get cleaned, turned out great, but should have asked how much first.LOL

Ordering parts Thurs. start putting it back together, Oh yeah still have that damn Tilly carb to put back together.

Want another panther? I dono if the year is right cuz it dont look like yours too much.. Its right in mankato tho haha..

OCR 11-21-2008 07:36 AM

That looks like a 74-76 Panther.

SnowAttitude 11-22-2008 09:19 AM

Think its a 74

There you go, you wanted a vintage sled, offer him $50 -$75 since it dont run, needs work

I Put new slides on, idealer wheels, started taken off broken cleats, Damn, I dont have any cleats, gave away a spare track, Dumb.
All I have are about a dozen Ice cleats, and I dont want to use them. Should have bought a box of 50 Ice cleats when I had a chance years ago.

Well today I'm heading out to post the trails, which about 90% are across fields and ditches.

westman995 11-22-2008 11:55 AM

I cant afford it right now, i do want a vintage but was also wanting to get a polaris since i have a 440 fan motor that just needs a bearing and crank seals and it shouild be good to go. But i have alot of stuff i need to get taken care of so i can ride the other sleds this season first.

Did it snow there in kato today/last night?

Cant you just put a rubber track on it or do you not want to put one on?

westman995 11-22-2008 09:45 PM

Went to kato today. Didnt see much for snow but a little, i think we got more than up there again. We dont have much but its a start and im hoping this time it stays so next time it snows it can start accmulating!

SnowAttitude 11-23-2008 01:47 PM

I should had you stoped in Ornsby and pick up some cleats. Might end up driving down there so I can put it back together next weekend.

Tried many years ago putting a rubber track on a Panther, didnt work, to sharp of bends for the rubber.

Sat. spent from 10am to about 6:30pm putting up trail signs.
Maybe this weekend also?

Ah thats not too far from ya anyways haha.. Never been around the cleated tracks so i dono anything about them..

Thats a long time, you dont get paid to do that, right? Where did you all put signs up? just around mankato? Im gona have to go ride them this year.

SnowAttitude 11-23-2008 06:07 PM

No pay, beer and food.

We do all of Nicollet county. close to 200 miles. almost all of it has to be marked each fall, then taken out in the spring. We did about 35 miles, there should have been other groups out also. Plus all the fields have to be p;owed/dics, so there a little smoother, then they get rolled to flatten out the bumps, a lot of time, for a few guys

We did one section yesterday, might be doing a section from N kato to Nicollet this weekend.

You should join a club, they can use the help. Find people to ride with.
Everyone in our group where around 40? one guys son was there also.
They can use young guns, especially if they have ATV.

westman995 11-23-2008 07:48 PM

Thats pretty cool. Id actually be interested in doing something like that, no atv tho.

SnowAttitude 11-24-2008 07:16 AM

Check this out, lots of info, trails, clubs in MN

westman995 11-24-2008 06:29 PM

Sweet ill check it out. What club are you in? You definitly gotta show me some trails and places to ride this winter, ive only ridden the ditches around here..

SnowAttitude 11-24-2008 08:21 PM

You have some nice riding down by Madilia to Amboy.

also check out the state park by Windom.

westman995 11-24-2008 08:40 PM

Nice dude, thanks for the link to the map. Do we usually have very ridable snow by winter or no? Maybe we can meet up for some riding when i get my christmas break off from school..

The only trail ive ever ridden was that little one over by odin, i rode it from close by odin to the highway and back, i rode my sled out to odin cuz we used to have a house there, i just randomly came across it so i followed it haha..

westman995 11-24-2008 08:46 PM

Do you got any idea as you like how many miles it is from st james to madelia by riding pure trails? I see there is trail from here to there but it goes the other way first and the towards madelia, so maybe it is on the side of the road, i have no idea.
