Pushing close to 150 psi per side, pump gas?
 
Ok im getting a little skeptical about running straight pump gas with oil mix in it when a cold comrpession test is telling me about 150 psi per cylinder. Is that really safe?

Also how much space should be between the cylinders and piston? When i put it together it seemed loose in there. Someone asked the same on dootalk, and someoen told him it was fine and normal or something. Is that right? It just seems loose and im almost afraid of running the sled anymore after thinking of these things.

And one of the rave valves, one pushes out by itself and one doesnt?

And another thing, my dad was saying you could put like some e85 in with the regular gas and you could run it leaner. Would that really work? Im all for anything that will run less gas and is cheaper haha..

Hmm he said you could lean it out cuz it would burn cooler or something?

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought there is less power in ethanol, so you have to run more through the motor. Higher octane runs cooler, so I can see his point, but I thought I read otherwise. Search on Snow Tech's website. I think they had an article on this topic last year.

Just stay away from E85.

You guys are thinking about it wrong.... E85 has more OXYGEN in it. There fore will have to richen up the jetting to compensate.

Ah ok thats what rubi had said, so he was right. I was just wondering about that, i wont mess with it.


What do you guys think about 150 psi on a cold engine with standard pump gas?

psi doesnt totally mean octane rating, a lot of sleds can only run 135 lbs compression and have to run 92 octane, others can run 150+ on 92 octane, for sure you should be running 92 octane. you have to check the plugs for color and detonation. along with what the maker says to run for gas requirements.

Ok i have no clue about this octane stuff really. What is 92 octane, pump gas like unleaded or super unleaded or something?

Manual for this year and model sled says to run unleaded 87 octance.. ?

use the premium gas whenever its avaliable. that way you are sure that you are meeting 87 octane requirements.
what about your noise? any clues yet?

NOPE, not a damn thing. Ive tried so much stuff its not even funny. Its actually starting to piss me off. Ive made sure bolts are tight, tried without the belt, held stuff down to make sure its not vibrating. Held the rave valves and moved them while running it. Is that bad? I got vids of it, but they dont show the noise that im hearing in person, it wont show up. But i think i can hear other crap in the video that may or may not be a problem haha..

its rpm related do you have anything gear drive like water pump or rotary valve? could it be one of them?

Hmm.. I dont think so. It goes like zzzttt like air or something rubbing or something.

Ya it has the rave valves, im not sure about rotary, i think that is only on the piston port rotax engines? Or is taht what rotax stands for?

Either way, it has the rave valves, crank driven water pump, and its a reed case engine. If that helps any.

Im really afraid to ride it and wreck it, couldnt it damage more than if i fix it now, or find the problem. I got the clutch off, not gona run it wihtout tho i dont think due to its not good for the engine, but tomorrow im gona try and make sure its real clean, and if that doenst work. Im gona drain the coolant and pull the water pump housing off and put a couple drops of oil on the shaft. Kinda dont think thats the problem tho. And i hope i can reuse the gasket on it, it was new when i put it togther this summer.

Well this is what drives the water pump and oil pump if i put oil injection on it. Is that called the rotary? Im thinking no, i think rotary is that shit where a plate spins around the intake ports, like the older 583 engines. Either way, the pics can give some more ideas maybe.

O ya, and how do the raves look? are they supposed to go out at the same time or no? One seems to sit out more while the other is in. But they both move. And with the covers and springs on they will, or should both be pushed in i guess.

The key to your motor Westy is reading the plugs and the electrodes. You want to make sure that you see a "wet" mark or burn, on the electrode, if you see it to be dry and burning past the "bend", you are too lean. If you are burning on the corner and or bend or past, you can bet that you are playing with a melt down

Wow, now that is a slick fuckin setup. They took the rotary valve out of the old cases and put the water pump in its place. I am truly impressed.

Well im safe for now with what im jetted at. Im just trying to figure out the noise. After getting the carbs synced i havent got to run it and check plugs now. I might stay at 300 but im not sure yet due to not getting to try it after setting the carbs right haha.

Goofy question, but is something lose? Try put upa video with RMP's slightly up, not engaging primary, but close, for about 10-15 seconds, don't rev engine either, makes it hard to hear.

Another question, is that the primary clutch from that motor?

When you put the motor back together, did you check the crank bearings? Just has that sound of something spinning on a shaft, could be way off, just has that sound from the video.

Another thing, when taking the new video, stand clear of the primary clutch, well as best you can while getting that sound. With an undiagnosed problem best to always assume everything. I would hate to see the next video you post have the primary flying off and hitting you in the face.

Ive checked for loose stuff. Exhaust springs, motor mounts, ski loops, etc. Gotta be engine noise. Ill get a video like that today, well try to atleast.

Ya this is the 440 clutch that came on it, but the enigne i replaced with a new bottom end (crank and case) and a cylinder and piston so half of the engine is different now.

I did look the bearings over a litte, they seemed fine. And im pretty sure this bottom end was off a fairly low mile motor, i think they parted it out cuz they built a mod motor and used some of the other parts off it for it.
