Headin' West

Usually about mid summer I start thinking about next year's trip. I guess since my season ended early I'm ahead of schedule. I know last year we had Mud, Slick, Danger, Lil' Dave, Andy and others in on the trip.

Who is in this year?

I'm thinking The Snowies, Togwotee or Cooke City. I'm also open to other locations such as Alpine, WY and a few others. The Snowies is always good and probably the closest. Togwotee is another haul but I'm curious to check it out. Cooke City is awesome in the riding and the feel of the town.

If you're in OR have any suggestions I'm all ears.

I'm throwing this out there now to get buy-in from everyone. I know Harry has talked about going. I know Bryan wants to go but is too whipped.

I'm pretty much thinking early January again. December can be hit or miss and it is just safer to go with what we know is SUPPOSED to be good. If it doesn't happen in Jan. for any reason we can go in Feb. or just shoot for mid April.

Gotmud 06-11-2010 11:00 AM

I'm game for early January. To be pretty honest I don't really care where we go either, but obviously less drivetime the better. I'd love to ride Alpine again, that is an awesome ride!

fgsacts 06-11-2010 11:52 PM

I'm in. Don't care where. I like the Snowy's but if there is no gas again this year I would rule it out.

maybe this will light some fires...

Fires are officially lit! Let's start planning.

cuzzinolaf 07-11-2010 09:30 PM

Cooke? Snowies? Togwotee?

Rubi 07-11-2010 11:35 PM

I'd probably go if the trip were to Togwotee. I might be getting a timeshare in Island Park from my Dad, so that may work into the mix for Nutz who may want to ride with DCUBA.

Gotmud 07-12-2010 12:38 PM

My fire has been lit for a few weeks, summer is way too fucking long. I'm game, wherever, whenever.:olaf"

This may surprise some of you, but as long as I don't knock Jamie up I'm 100% in. Her birthday is Jan. 4th, so that needs to be avoided. So I'm thinking the 6-9 of January?

The other small issue is tuning my sled and getting my clutching dialed in, if I can make a 3 or 4 day trip to the UP or Jason's field next to his house sometime BEFORE this trip I'm totally good to go.

slickwilly08 07-12-2010 01:52 PM

I am also in...

I take it your just thinking about the drive lol? WTF dude that would give us 2 days of ride time with them dates, and that's if we don't go far? I don't want to drive out west without at least 3 riding days.

So your going to dial in your clutching at Jasons, for riding in elevation? ???

I was going to ask the same thing. You're going to need to find someone who has a very similar sled and find out what their set up is for elevation, and what elevation. You're talking two completely different monsters, remember you're going to lose power at a rate of 3.5-5%/1000 ft in elevation change.

Ibreakstuff 07-12-2010 03:52 PM

I understand all that, but if I told you where my gearing and clutching is at now, you'd say my sled shouldn't even move.

I need to set up for lowlands as a baseline guys.

fgsacts 07-13-2010 04:44 PM

Later into January would be nice. Lower risk of poor snow. I prefer the shorter drive to the Snowies. There is my two cents. Any idea what the gas availability is going to be up near Green Rock (Snowy Mountain Lodge area of the Snowies)? I have not been on Snowest or BCR much at all. If no gas at Green Rock, I'll be happy with what everyone want's to do as far as destination. I am also willing to drive and pull my open four place.

cuzzinolaf 07-13-2010 05:38 PM

I have a link at home for another lodge that has a restaurant, bar, and gas on the other side of the range. I only saw it mentioned once because Rick Mom's group stays there. I think it is outside of Encampment...

fgsacts 07-13-2010 07:03 PM

I have been there before for gas and food. It is at lower elevation if it is the one I am thinking of. We should look into it though and confirm. Mountain Meadows is nice but no gas is a big negative. How far to Cooke again?

cuzzinolaf 07-13-2010 07:35 PM

Cooke is a little over 1300 miles from South Elgin.

fgsacts 07-13-2010 08:12 PM

This is the place I am talking about.

fgsacts 07-13-2010 08:30 PM

What about that area in Colorado Mike Duffy was raving about?

Ibreakstuff 07-13-2010 08:36 PM

I was going with early January as requested, but if we move it to late January then I'm fine. Dom's bday is Feb 8th and the baby's is the 19th. So anytime after January 12th will be fine. If we make it in the middle of the month, then we can plan on the Slednutz UP group ride for the first weekend in February (3-4-5-6ish).

Ibreakstuff 07-13-2010 08:38 PM

Holy fuck 105 a person per night? What happened to "It's really not much more to ride out west than in the UP"????

fgsacts 07-13-2010 08:46 PM

I have never stayed there. I believe that includes meals also but still pricey. The only reason I brought that place up is because I believe they have fuel on site. A big ass cabin near there would be ideal. As long as we don't have to trailer for gas each day.

cuzzinolaf 07-13-2010 09:04 PM

I think this is the one Mike Duffy mentioned....

Haha! I am glad I am not the only one who noticed that!
