Bendix Help

The Bendix in my Sportsman is just free spinning and not engaging. Can I take it off, clean and lube it up or do I need another? What type of lube and is there a gasket for the recoil cover or do I just glue it back on with a little pussy snot???

I was thinking of pulling it off, cleaning it, streching the spring a little and lubing it up with some Lithum greese.

Mud I know you know what I mean!!!!!
Thanks

I'm not sure about with an ATV but I know in jetskis it's better to replace it. Although cleaning it up can help limp it along replacing it is gonna be better. As I understand it the bendix will eventually not disengage, keeping it on the flywheel, causing all kinds of problems. I would imagine it's probably a similar situation.

Plus, if you start cleaning it and putting lube on it you're just gonna have to keep going through all of that. But, if you replace you're done.

Again my experience with bendix issues is stricly related to jetskis.

Ok so I took the recoil cover off and there was a ton of mud and water. Everything was rusted to shit. I pulled the entire bendix apart and cleaned the hell out of it and it works like a dream now. I also noticed that the two thrust washers that go on each end of the bendix were missing. The recoil also wasn't working properly so I tool it apart, cleaned it and now it works great. I think that the main problem was that water got behind the cover so I took some extra percautions to make sure that dosn't happen again.
I'll give it a try this weekend.
Thanks

Glad you got it figured out Rich! Is your skinny ass gonna finally come ride with us this year? We need to start planning a ride in Cadillac or somewhere you can make it.

I'm going to need a sled to ride if I come out that way! I'm supposed to be called back to work in the next week or so. It's going to be nice to get my life started again since it's been on hold for over 2 years now! But Oh Baby, when I get some bills cleaned up it's back to toy city.
P.S. Not that skinny any more.

I have a sled you can ride. You should plan a trip.:poke:

PS.. I'm not skinny anymore either.

Any ATV trails or good riding up there?

Gotmud 10-01-2010 09:53 PM

There are some atv trails in Baldwin that Shane and I have ridden. Basically most of the snowmobile trails are atv trails in the summer.
