'10/'11 Minnesota Snow Conditions Thread

I'll start up the official snow conditions thread again this year. Riley and Grease rode some great snow up on the North Shore already, The Cities got a big storm awhile back, and Northwest MN has some snow that Wolfie sampled, but nobody started the official thread yet.

Snow conditions in Alexandria: 2 inches of snowcover has melted down to about an inch since the warm weather hit yesterday. It's been snowing out for awhile now, and it's starting to stick to the roads. Hoping the weatherman is right, and this turns into a decent snowfall.

Madcow 11-29-2010 03:38 PM

skidding some nice tall popple trees today along with getting some fertilizer spread, and then the rain came.
couple inches of snow and good start to ice on the lakes and rivers. wont take but a good cold night to get ice back going. around the pine city area we use the lakes and river for some important riding.

Dumping lots of snow here, predicting 3-7 ( 1hour north of Grease)

blue avenger 11-29-2010 09:24 PM

Madcow 11-30-2010 07:38 AM

I got blizzarded out of going to work today, but it was also way the hell too windy for me to venture out. Visibility was prettymuch nothing.

All the base has been blown off the fields, which is where most of my riding was going to happen. I work tomorrow, and leave right after that to have the rest of my week sucked up by an escapade down past Rochester again.

blue avenger 11-30-2010 05:57 PM

no snow here! cold and windy! Cabalas in Owatonna on I35 has exploding targets. The kind where you mix two parts and then shoot them with something like a .223 for a nice explosion. there back by the rifles on an endcap.

DirtylilWolfess 11-30-2010 06:05 PM

They have 'em here too - don't waste your money though. You can get them for less than half that price online.

Possible bad driving conditions tomorrow evening BA? Or are things going to stay snowless for a while?

blue avenger 11-30-2010 06:20 PM

no snow until sat then not much, but your welcome to get snowed in by a blizzard!!!!!!

Madcow 11-30-2010 08:13 PM

we have enough snow for some grass field testing. the snow pushed the ice down so it will take some time for the river and lake to be ridable.

DirtylilWolfess 12-03-2010 10:07 PM

Dear BA. As of 5 minutes ago, some 6-7 inches of snow have fallen upon the lands of Stewartville/Rochester. The snow started coming down sometime around 2pm, earlier than forecast.

Brought your storm.

Love, Wolfie.

Greasemonkey was not up north last wekend, it was Riley and he reported 18" of snow at the Trestle, northeast of Finland, Mn.

Spoke with Grease earlier tonight and there is about a foot of snow at the Knotted Pine in Isabella, Mn. He was clearing trails for the local club and managed about 3 miles worth today !

Sounds like the swamps haven't frozen yet and that is going to make for an interesting year riding in some of the places we go. Fire roads and forestry roads are rideable....

your the best friend a guy could have! In fact you can be my best friend this week! My daughter was out for a "test" ride already last night. Just wanted to see if she was Girl enough to start the tripple.

Hopefully we'll get a cold snap before the next big dumping so nobody sinks a groomer this year.

blue avenger 12-04-2010 12:21 PM

Groomers don't walk on floating bogs? ;)

Not that it matters for braaaping - but I was blowing snow all over Ramsey county today. Northern side was about 5 inches, and southern was about 8 inches. Nice and light, so my old Roper 826 raged right through it.

not only can she start it, she can blow it up! she put a rod through the case!
500 indy for her now. LOL

Madcow 12-04-2010 08:40 PM

got about 2" of nice fluff.

1down5up 12-04-2010 11:20 PM

somewhere in the neighborhood of 5-6" here in forest lake on top of a measley 2" base. My daughter and I were breaking trail this morning. overgrowth got mowed down and fallen trees got either pulled aside or plowed over. the front bumper on a wedge is surprisingly tough. I did see 20 some people standing out in the middle of coon lake fishing so we blasted across the lake.
By the time we headed for home the trail we blazed was pounded half to death by sleds all day. We need more snow.

DirtylilWolfess 12-10-2010 01:44 AM

An inch of snow showed up, paired with some wicked wind, which has really smeared the conditions into crap. Then it rained enough to build up damnnear 1/4" of ice on my car within 40 miles of driving.

Fields are bare again, but there are new drifts to pound (even if they might be rock solid)!

1-2 Feet of Snow Saturday, Blizzard Conditions Possible (most snow since the Halloween Superstorm?)
Posted by Paul Douglas

Last update: December 10, 2010 - 11:13 AM

* This has the potential to be the biggest snowstorm for much of Minnesota since Halloween, 1991.

* Potential for 1-2 feet of snow Saturday, with 2-5 foot drifts during the PM hours.
* Close to blizzard criteria - best chance of white-out conditions south/west of the metro area.

* Winter Storm Warning for much of Minnesota/Wisconsin. Blizzard Watch posted for southwestern MN.

* Get your errands/shopping done today, snow arrives late evening, between 8 and 10 pm, snow gets heavier and steadier as the night goes on - should be snowing heavily when we wake up Saturday morning.

* Conditions get worse as the day goes on tomorrow as winds increase and snow accumulates (even on the freeways and interstates). Temperatures will fall through the teens into the single digits - making it a light, powdery snow - prone to blowing and drifting.

* I know this is a mouthful, but travel simply isn't recommended Saturday and Saturday night. Never tell a Minnesotan not to travel, I get it. But the combination of snow/wind/falling temperatures will create truly treacherous conditions. If you run out of gas or go into a ditch tomorrow it could be more than just a minor inconvenience. With wind chill values dipping to -25 or lower it could quickly become life-threatening. Try to get your travel done by this evening, or plan on waiting until Sunday (afternoon) to get back on the highways.

* Wind chills by Saturday night dip down to -20 to -35, extreme danger zone.

You guys are going to get slammed by the looks of it Rock. Hopefully it tracks a little farther north so DCUBA gets some of the goods too.

Rubi 12-10-2010 01:23 PM

Might have to trailer down to the Big City. Too bad I don't have a sled that works decent.
