need help drag racing 1/8 mile
I have a banshee frame with a polaris 800 storm engine on it. I need help on the clutching please!!!! I know there are people that have dont this before. If you know someone or someone that can help please let me know. thanks

Although I've talked about it for a couple years and have everything to do it, I've never tried making one myself. I do drag race atvs though and race a couple similar setup machines. I don't know alot about their setups but I'm sure I could help you somewhat. Give me more info, how is yours setup?
Stock Storm 800 with triple pipes on bike? Carbs jetting same as winter?
I need more info lol.
What time did you run in 1/8 mile, and how far were you spinning?
And while your at it, we all want to see pictures lol.

what rpm is the engine suppose to run at? is it stock or ported? pipes stock or aftermarket?

lol!!!!!!!!! I love the part how far was you spinning. thats the thing I wasnt. I ran a 9.77 at 69mph. It didnt hit the secondary clutch till the mph light. I dont have a tach on it yet, but its on its way. The engine is ported, new reeds, lectron 40mm on alky, high comprssion pistions. There is no suspension at all. I found out with my last banshee thay work alot better with no give in the suspension. Now as for gearing front sprocket 16 teeth I do belive rear sprocket 45 teeth. Now for the clutching I have no clue, all I know is there is a gold spring in the primary clutch. when it come to setting up the clutching I have no clue. this is my first time messing with a snowmobile engine.

Every machine I've seen at the races with a setup like that has huge gears. The rear aren't much smaller than the wheels.
You on cement or dirt?
I almost bought this rolling chassis last year to build, look how big the rear sprocket is.

Hard to see the pictures, they are pretty small.
Edit: Video just downloaded, fuckin nice!! If you cant shift into high gear you need a lighter secondary spring. Being in a custom application like that you really have no base clutching, unless you know someone to ask with a similar setup. Your stuck with trial and error, start throwing different components until it runs best. Your going to need a tach to really dial it in. Is it launching at the rpm you want it to and just not shifting into high gear?

I'd pull the secondary spring and take it into a snowmobile shop, simply tell them you need a lighter spring. Explain to the what your doing and why you need a lighter spring, they may know a little something to help.

it leaves good. sounds like it only turning about 4000-6000 rpms all the way till you get about to the mph light in the 1/8 mile, then it shifts and hauls a$$

Do you know what helix is in the secondary? I race this coming Sunday and can ask the guys that run them setups to see what they are doing. Though I also drag on sand and clay, haven't stepped up to asphalt yet.

for clutching i would go with a very huge helix and stiff secondary spring, the engine and clutch doesnt know that its not in a sled. for drags in them old triples if you can find a 54-34, 56-34, 56-38, anything like that, then a very stiff spring.

I have a 54-48, yep 48 degree finish angle and even with the little hp my engine makes it shut that sled right down the first time i used that helix. sled launched hard then at about the 200' mark is when it shifted to the 48 degree and the rpms dropped like he hit the kill swithc. lol!
for the primary spring i would look for something in the 180 range for a first number, the second number in the 300-350 area. so a 180-350 spring would be a good one.

for wieghts i have the heavy hitters in now and are setup more as a drag weight, very very aggressive out of the hole, when that 1000cc motor is hit you better be hanging on hard because that sled leaps off the line.
other wise the heal clickers two speed wieght is a real good drag racing weight.

the heel clickers vs polaris weights on similar setup machines is not even a race. the heel clicker sled simply launches and is instantly a sled length ahead.

they are both an adjustable weight and work very well.

ok not to sound dump, but what is a helix. like I said before I know nothing at all about the clutch set up on these things. Now building the engine my 2 year old could do that. I just never been around anything with a clutch set up like this, but iam trying to learn. I just know when I do get it right I should be running in the 6's in the 1/8 mile with no problem. could you please go into detail what you are talking about 48 degree. Iam sorry for asking so much, but if there is a page that tells me what all this is, and does I would love to know. I just need a good starting point first. Iam going to try what you said madcow. I really do appreciate the help so much. Iam glad there are fourms like these out there.

I learned alot from that book, and I read it often. Buying it will explain to you exactly how the cluthes work, you'll love it.

Helix is the ramp section of the secondary that makes it open up at a specific rate with resistance from the spring.
