You broke a tooth off on the gear that makes it go in reverse?
If that is all, put it together and drive it out.
You can use ATF [12oz] with no harmful results.

Sounds like your chaincase bearings are totally shot. Tighten up the adjuster on the chaincase to tighten the chain as tight as it will go. Then you should be able to drive it home.

thanks , guys but can I use blue silicone, and do I have to put the gear back in, or can I leave it out,

Kind of needs the gear to move? If your bearings are shot they are also the seal, they aren't expensive either. Replace the bearings after you get it home. You make it sound like its out in the snow somewhere and you need to get it home. Tighten the chain and get it home, take it apart and assess the situation. If your bearings are shot there is NO getting around replacement. ???

It's a pretty awesome writeup. I've linked to it a few times on SF and on this site.
