Default 70 horse evinrude trouble

I just acquired an older boat with a 70 horse evinrude on it and i have an issue with it. It will not take off. It will not go above 3200 rpm in gear. I checked the plugs and cylinders and they are all firing. Does anyone have any clue as to what is wrong?

Thanks

(yeah its a two stroke triple)

^^^Make sure your linkage is all correct. If it isn't, it'll retard the timing so it won't rev out.

Check compression first though.

The older 70hp triples had a fuel delivery problem, sometimes it was a choke problem or the carbs were toast! Ask Greasemonkey, he gave up on his and found a 60hp Merc that outdid the old Johnson!

How old of a motor??
I had a 1988 Evinrude VRO and if was a pain to keep tuned. The timing is real critical on them.
They had problems with idling and running to lean at low RPM's
When they are tuned right, they are great but when they screw up, they are a pain in the ass to get running right.
Finally got rid of mine and got a 1999 Mercury 60HP bigfoot. Lost 10 HP,gained 10 years and gained 5 MPH. Plus power tilt.
Find someone local that knows what they are doing with them and have him tune it up.
Check the compression first. If the top cylinder is lower than the rest, get rid of it.
The VRO stands for variable ratio oil( or something like that). At idle, they can run as lean as 120-1 ratio and leans out the top cylinder.

Sorry for the long reply guys....i have to do all posting from my phone. I am mechanically dumb so i do not have the tools or knowledge to check the compression. I am fairly sure the motor is a 76 also thanks.

It does....however that is not it, unless the fuel line is bad for my little outboard....and it not. I am going to take it somewhere and get ripped off I know, but I cannot afford to get another motor. Plus I probably could not get a lot out of this one.
