Default how to fix leaking base gaskets.

it seems every couple years i get a sled that has base gasket problems, the customer keeps putting in paper factory gaskets and they blow out or leak.
my first fix was to simply switch to cometic rubber coated steel. on my 1000 i had a leaking base gasket that for some reason the rubber coated steel wouldnt seal. i tried several new ones to no success.

made sure the engine was good and warm, then took off the top end.

finally used some copper coat. i had used copper coat for many years on exhaust manifold gaskets and head gaskets on tractors. just like painting i put on several heavy layers and let them get sticky. then i sprayed the bottom of the cylinders as well in a heavy coat.
bolted it together and let it sit for a good hour or so. went out now and tried it and so far success!!

Just had the same problem with my new 600HO, the Cometic Viton coated gaskets were leaking and I tore them taking the top end off. So I'm waiting on a new set and I am going to use case sealer (hondabond) on them.

if they are a paper or fiber gasket the crank case sealant might become a lubricant or bearing surface for the gasket to sqweeze out on. been there done that already.
on any engine i get the steel/rubber coated because 99% of the time they will seal where the paper ones wont or were the paper is blowing out.

the copper coat is an adhesive, so if let to dry you woulk like to think it will hold in place.
the crankcase sealant is anaerobic? or something like that, some will not harden if sqweezed because they need air to cure them. silicon if you sqweeze to parts together it cures in a matter of time.

anaerobic sealants set when air is excluded, loctite 515 is such a product. it looks like grape jelly and with a very light coating willset and extrude and fill any imperfections, it also will add around .003" thickness to a gasket. it is called a gasket eliminator, and can be used solely by itself in some areas, if you embed a thread in the goo and follow the contour of the casting the thread will keep from extruding all of the material and actually form a plasticized gasket upon assembly and exclusion of the air. i have used this product for over 30 years and always have some on hand for special applications and backup of gaskets.

silicone dissloves in the presence of gasoline, the copper coat you refer to is obviously the spray type that has a contact cement type additive, we used that on the head gaskets on our drag race engines that are pure copper as an additional seal for the coolant ports in the head to block, 4 or 5 coats on the gasket prevent water migrating into the cylinder bores. silicone has its uses but not where gasoline is in contact.

what worked real good was simply cleaning the top of the case, putting dykem on it, then filing it to find high spots. lol!!

used to use copper coat on centerfold paper to make head gaskets for my briggs cart motor. Best quality paper you could get at the time and the copper spray made them last a while. poor mans way to raise compression.

Threebond 1211, that's all I have to say.

Yamabond, hondabond, etc are cheap knockoffs that look like rubber cement. Threebond forever. Anaerobic, use it in place of head gaskets, sealing cases. It's the SHIT.

I just used yamabond on my base gaskets a month or 2 ago. 1k miles on it and no leaks.
