Default Please help new guy, XC600man with his problem

Seems this new fella has a squeeling sound coming from by his primary clutch. I was helping him in the chatbox, but I gotta go. Welcome him and see if you can troubleshoot his problem.

Damn, Rubi. Are you getting commission for chasing down new members with sled problems?

I don't know. I just see these new people wandering in the scary wilderness of the chatbox, so I pop in and try to help them. I heard of this eastern thing called karma, so I'm hoping that someone will help me with mine in return. I'm starting to think that the plan I had a week or so ago, to just ride mine hard until it blew, wasn't such a bad idea.

My problem is that when my sled (xc600sp 1999) is warmed up and when i come to a stop i get this squeeling sound down by the primary clutch. Also when i take off and turn left (clutch side) it squeels but goes away at faster speed. Need some help.....

Looks like you got the posting figured out. Does it ever squeal when the secondary is engaged and you're moving, or is it only when the belt is slack when the secondary clutch isn't engaged?

Jack your sled up on a stand. (A 2x6 under the rear bumper should work) When you have your belt off, pull on the track and see if it moves freely. If you're going to listen for the squeal without the belt, don't be revving up the sled. If the clutch engages without the belt, you could cause damage.

What do you think it would be if it still squeals with belt off just idling?

If the belt is off and it still squeals, you've got problems. If it does it when you turn, maybe the chassis flexes and your clutch rubs on something. Check clearance all around it. Check the clutch carefully for wearing parts. I don't know what could squeal in the primary, but you never know. I know you don't want to hear this, but if it is a metallic squeal, it could be your clutch side crank end bearing. Is the oil line right above the pto end of the crankshaft (behind primary clutch) in good condition and full of oil?

Squealing usually means your belt tension is too tight, the squealing you hear is the primary rubbing on the belt because your secondary is pulling it back too far.

But you hear squealing with the belt off? Check to make sure the engine torque arm(s) are all tight and the clutch is not able to rub on anything. If you have another domestic twin you can borrow a primary from try swapping them to see if it changes anything. If you swap clutches and still hear squealing it may be something in the crank.

look usually if it squeels and its not the belt it usually means that the clutch....secondary i take it.....the rubber bushing in the center is shot....done for....game over.....buy a new roller clutch.....make sure you get the balanced one....it costs more but is way better on everything....there are usually drilled holes on one side if its been balanced....original is usually balanced....after market NOT BALANCED....but then again if sled is 100HP or less balanced not neccessary

^^ Here we go again, did you even read the dudes problem? I agree with Posersledder, if its squeeling without the belt installed then you need to swap your primary and see if it solves it. Hope and pray it does.

yes i did....he said it squeeled with the belt on and with it off....now either he or u is butt stupid....cause when it squeels both ways then usually the center on the secondary is toast and its way eaiser to pull off (slides off) the secondary and have a lookski than taking the tapered primary off which HARDLY EVER SQUEELS AT ALL IN THE FIRST PLACE....hopefully he cleaned both sheaves FIRST....then checked belt height on the sheave....then allignment....then took it off and it still squeeled.....WHICH I HIGHLY DOUBT IT DID.....so one of you is FUZZ NUTZ and a CHAIN YANKER.....thats what i get out of it

if it squeels with or without the belt on .....which i said i .....HIGHLY DOUBT THAT IT DOES THAT BUT HE SAYS IT IS SO WTF CHUCK....it means he aint doin it right and to check the freakin center of the freakin secondary clutch as it is usually 95% that bushing in the middle.....i'm guessin its an original clutch with about 9000 miles on it and he's like 16.....so ya....because when off secondary he probably leaving it belly pan and its rubbin against primary with it off sitting there close by....i dunno....but instead of taking the engine apart and changing out motor mounts and taking off a tapered primary with a clutch pulling tool and the 5 days or work you suggest i thought i might suggest...... SOMETHING FUCKING EASIER FIRST

I don't think he's tried it without the belt on yet. He just wants to know what the problem COULD be if it still squeals.

If it does it without a belt on, then it is likely a bearing.
