Default MSU Bound!!

My daughter got her acceptance letter to MSU yesterday, we're pretty excited for her. She wants to be a vet.

Yeah no shit lol, we talked about that last night. Its my step-daughter and her dad has money put away for college, but I'll end up picking up quite a bit of the tab I'm sure lol. I may be able to get her out of the house, but I'm worried I'll be paying all her bills while she's on campus lol.

Angel said tuition alone is $11,000/year. That doesn't include anything else though. And her dads college savings for her won't even cover a years tuition lol. She's applying for alot of grants, hopefully she'll get accepted to some. She has a 4.0 gpa and has been on the national honor society for the past 3 years.

She also wants to be part of a sorority.

I just checked our last bill and I was off a little. Tuition is around $5000/semester and dorm is $4127/semester. Closer to $18,000/year.

Holy fuck batman, it costs that much just to live on campus?!?!? Yeah I can see this is gonna be pretty fuckin expensive lol.

I'm just proud that the first one is going to college, hopefully they all are as driven as she is. Shane may only be 8 but he's been telling me for a year now that he wants to go in the Navy like his Grandpa did lol.

I've already told her I won't be footing the bill. I'd like to see her use college loans to pick up what grants won't cover. But, I don't want to see her rack up $50,000 debt before she's 21 either. I'm sure I'll help her, but I'm not paying everything.

Right on Madcow. Parents that pay all college expenses are creating a lifelong sense of entitlement in their kid. Even more importantly than younger kids, college kids need to know what it means to work, and what the value of a dollar is. This recent tendency in our society to provide for children from the womb to 35 years old is destroying the country.

Mud, don't fall for the myth that parents must foot the whole college bill. Make sure she has to work and supply some of her own money. (Work study doesn't count as work either... sitting around doing nothing for twenty bucks an hour isn't work.) I'm not saying to totally cut her loose the instant she turns 18, but make sure it isn't all handed to her.

I agree with what you speaketh. I do intend to help with tuition, how much really depends on how busy work is at the time. She sure as hell isn't getting a free ride through college from me. I already told her she'll have to get a job, I'm not paying her living expenses. But I'll bet her mom will and not tell me lol, that wouldn't surprise me at all.

I guess I am guilty of this, only because I put money away for them knowing they were going to go to some kind of schooling. While I dont have enough saved for them to go to a big dollar Univ. I have saved enough for my kids to go to a nice trade school. If they wanted more they knew they would have to pay for it.I just dont want them starting life on their own behind the 8 ball.

I really dont think its a hand out but a hand up to make a better life.

Mine get no help if they do not have some sort of job!
I have talked to many young people the put them selves through college and now can't afford to live on normal jobs when the loan repayment is 1/2 there income or more.

I do cover what they can't to keep them in school.

I've heard horror stories as well, that is why I'm willing to help her. We discussed that as well. Vets don't make a whole lot, it would take forever to try repaying tuition loans after she graduated.

my youngest thought of being a vet, but that is a lot of school. I do have her convinced to go through the 1 year vet tech program at least. Her grades would let her go her senior year and have it paid for by the school district. She is thinking she might miss something at high school.

she dose not want to be a complete waste of time and spend her life in restaurants she said.

To each their own I guess. It took me 10 years to pay off my student loans. We made it a point to prepare for our kids education and I am glad we did. Neither one of my kids have once ever asked me for money. They both work(ed) to make gas/spending/fun money during the summers and while in school. My son recently moved to LA after he graduated and is living in a boarding house in the hood because it is all he can afford. Still has never asked me for money. He clearly doesn't have a sense of entitlement and I am proud of him for that. I am just glad we were able to give them a start in life without the burden of debt. I was forced to alter the course of my life early on because I had financial obligations to meet. I could only chase my dream for so long before reality set in. Our son, "Hollywood", is in a position that he can take longer to pursue his dreams because his overhead is so low. It brings joy to us seeing them grow as adults and chase their dreams. I am just happy that my wife and I were able to make it easier for them to do that. Besides, we have told both of them that they are our retirement plan so they better be successful. Seriously, I would rather them be happy and fullfilled than stressed and rich. If they can achieve wealth and happiness, than all the better. Just my take on the topic.

I'm going to have to say that if you have the means and are willing to help her out, do so Mud. First of all, college is supposed to be a learning experience, for you to get an education, but for you to learn about yourself as an individual, and learing life lessions as an adult on your own, which includes going to parties and drinking too much, blowing off exams/class, etc. It's tough for a person to get that experience and to learn the lessons that each thing will teach by having to work 40 hours a week and go to school. I learned many lessons through each of my mistakes I made during college, and cherish that experience today. One thing I regret is working so much during college, a lot of other individuals experienced a lot more than I was able. I regret working every spring break instead of taking a spring break to do stuff with friends and experience somewhere else other than ND.

I worked my ass off during school, there were 3 semesters of the 14 where I was unemployed, during the summer I ran my own business and worked 12-16 hour days on the farm with few days off during the summer. 1 semester during my senior year of undergrad and my first year of law school, where I would have likely been denied permission from the law school to work. I still have a lot of loans to pay back even though I worked hard. During the time I went to school farming wasn't very good for us and we worked our asses off during the summer doing other custom farm work to keep the farm afloat. My parents did whatever they could for me, although they don't think I remember it or appreciate it, I'm very appreciative for what my parents did for me in college. I can honestly and proudly say I tear up when I think of how lucky I am for the support I got from my parents while in college. I know they feel bad they weren't able to help more.

I graduated from undergrad with a loan total of $12,000, which was awesome, but then grad school changed that. After 3 years of expensive tuition, expensive books, 1 year of which I didn't work, I graduated from school with $67K in student loans. My student loans are financed for 20 years, they will paid off sooner, but for right now the interest is cheaper than any other thing I have financed it's foolish to pay these down first. When my $524/m payment comes out of my checking account every month it sucks and I don't wish that upon anyone else who graduates from college.

Be proud of her Mud, be proud of yourself, because she sounds like a testiment of good parenting and parents who are involved in her life.

My son is also going to MSU next fall. More importantly, for today, what is the snow looking like from Bloomingdale up through Allegan for riding?
