Default question on a 96 600 xcr reed /case engine

trying to solve a major running condtion sled has been to 2 shops already
with the same awsnser. crank out of phase!!
this is not my sled just working on it . the engine backfires like a shot gun , after running and the cust has already listened to one shop that sold him on a top end job in wich i dont think was the issue and the shop gave up on it . checked compresion . all 125 plus .
checked stator res test all passes , checked all 3 coils all past & have swamped out any way , removed the dead man little switch @ throttle also
so i pulled engine to inspect & replace crank seals as thats a rule of mine
so here is my biggest question after removing the assy that holds coil & fuel pumps above intake boots i noticed another crankcase port alot smaller than the fuel pump pulse port & inbetween center & mag cyl . it was not capped and nothing goes there & yes it goes directly into lower crankcase ??
what is it there for ?

have you checked the crank for out of phase yourself?
with a degree wheel and dial indicator its pretty easy, roll one piston to top using the dial indicator, zero out the degree wheel, put indicator on next piston and roll that one to top, at 120 degrees you should find the tdc on the dial indicator. go to the next one.

i believe that smaller port is for oil. does the crank have some big seals on it inbetween the mag and center cylinder? if not its not an original case or bottom end.
