SNAKE a cheap easy way to make flat is to get some sheets of 600 grit wet or dry sand paper.....put double faced tape on backs of paper and then stick them to.....i use a granite surface plate or something i no is flat.....i stone it off first too.....stick em in a big square so that you can put the drying dykem on the surface and then take the block upside down and rub in circular motion to take off high spots and to polish said surface into a 32 finish so that the gasket seal toot sweet.....400 grit to rough it in....use water for final polish but not too much or it loosens the tape....tape has to be one continuous surface on backs of sheets to insure flatness.....rub test alum over lightly first to see if there spots or dings that will rub into suface from debris and bumps from table if you dont clean or stone off good or are using the top of the combine hood as a table....as sheet of 1/4 thick window pane over the shitty table can work as a flat surface as well

i like to use a file with a straight edge against the back so you arent bending it when you apply some pressure.

not causein ya trouble MADCOW but SNAKE....

NEVER.....EVER......NEVER use a file.....they are not flat even if you put a straightedge on them.....use these.....MACHINIST STONES.....i use the 1 inch thick hockey puck style myself with a circular motion.....for stoning only use these for flatness ot that sandpaper way

use like a 8 inch long 1 inch square stone.....little bigger than these

for the first time i use dykem and then a straight edge, no file or cutting, just a straight edge to see where it rubs and doesnt rub the blueing off.

things like that would be nice.
if using a file the bad part is you can only take a couple swipes, then clean it. otherwise it will plug and gouge the case

the only SAFE WAY to use a file if at all.....is to rub ordinary white chalk onto the teeth.....coat every single one on the entire side.....both sides.....then ever so gently it will polish it but the chances of a scratch developeing at 90 to seal surface inside and outside is GREAT.....the stone or emery will eliminate scratches instead of possibly putting them in.....use oil or water with stone as well for 32 or better finish....

SNAKE for reference a glass window is about an 8 finish or better....a 32 is like the enamel finish on an appliance

Ok. I have pulled off the cylinder. Both the crank and cylinder gasket area's are flat. I used a straight edge to determine this. I checked from many angles. I have noticed scratches on the crank side that go in almost every dirction. There is minor pitting on the cylinder that was there from the reman as well as some minor scratches. So now what.

clean it up and toss in the new gasket.
if that paper one leaks then use a cometic rubber coated and put crank case sealant on it.

Do you have a part number for that gasket? Just got done installing the cylinder. I used some crankcase sealant on the scratch on the case by the water jacket but left the cylinder side alone. Hopefully I can fill and test it tomorrow. Thanks josh

no, just call cometic and tell them you need a steel/rubber coated stock replacement.
