I've got a 78 XS750 Special at home, but I want to treat myself to something new and I know I can't afford a new truck and I'd rather build my own sled than buy a brand new one. And I really like the minimalist muscle style of something like the blacked out 883 or 48

you have a xs750 there is so much you could do with that!! i would save the 12k from a new harley and put about 3k into the xs and build something super nasty!! those xs's are perfect platforms for bobbers and street trackers.. im sure you have had to of googled them.
check this site out:
http://www.ardcorechoppers.com/

here is a couple nice xs bobbers:

or street tracker that shit:

I've seen that last one before. I have a 78 XS750SP and a 72 zuki TM250. They both need a little work The 250 needs a new carb and some seals. The 750 was my Dad's bike, dont even ask me for all of its history, the brief overview is that it's been in some wrecks where my Dad's body ended up knocking over 3" poplar trees (forks and everything have been fixed several times), on top of that the tranny needs some work and it needs a new set of carbs, I paid over $100 for the carbs to be rebuilt only to find that the needles and seats still leaked and the float supports were broken in one carb). I work on my sled and my truck often enough, I want something that works. And most 750's done on a budget don't look very nice.

i hear ya about not wanting to work on the bike all the time. its nice to hop on and ride with no worries.
and building on a budget doesnt meant it will look like shit. its more of who the builder is and how much can be done by the builder. you seem to be pretty crafty and handy so you could probably make a lot of the parts and do the fab work yourself.

I actually saw one of those for sale around here a while back. It would be kind of neat to have one.

It's just waiting for the appropriate weather to come out of hiding.

With the price of gas the way it is, I'll probably be riding that most of the time all summer and in any weather too.

I'm another that would nix the 883 for a 1200! 338s are like 340 sleds, they get you out, but your always sucking hind tit!

damn, all I got for college graduation was a painting my grandparents said was worth 200 dollars. Now I wish I had that money to get an ankle brace to wear on my sled. Breaking your ankle is no fun when it seriously alters you favorite activity. Luckily there have been enough ankle support options to keep my having a good time on my sled. Have you guys ever been to http://www.ultraankle.com?

Got the 750 cleaned up and running, so my dad is taking it back again lol and after looking at my student loans.....I might just have to get a bike to keep my fuel costs down driving 12mi to work each day and it'll probably be an old 883 or a rocket. Something that'll easily get 50-60mpg.

A moped gets more than that so you should be good.
