Default power loss

Here is the scenerio:
1989 polaris indy trail 500 air cooled

Sled starts good. HAS been running just fine on the short burst Ive been able to ride. Finally get a few inches to ride a ditch (at least its finally outta the garage) and 15 minutes into my ride the sled would barely even go up a driveway approach. It also seems as if the machine sits it makes it worse. If If I turn it off for a few minutes I can at least limp it home. Once it gets going it seems to be fine and have normal power. It doesnt seem to engage till around 4000rmp. Thoughts? Clutch? Carbs not in sync?

4000 is the proper engagement rpm.
Have the clutches ever been serviced/cleaned?
Most likely the problem is a dirty/sticking primary.

If its warm out, fan-cooled are finicky in the warmer weather and you may be running a bit too rich. WL
