Default Burned or just flooded?

Hi-

I'm new to the snowmachine world. I recently purchased a 94 polaris indy trail 550. I started it the other day in -25F and I tried to get going without letting it warm up. The throttle stuck engaged and I went about 50 yards before it putted and died. I haven't been able to get it to start since? Is it just flooded or burned down? Thanks.

Does the crank turn if you pull the rope or turn the primary clutch by hand? If the motor isn't seized, check if the plugs are wet and if they spark when you pull it over. See if you can get a hold of a compression tester. If it has compression and spark it should run if you get fuel to it.

The cord still pulls. That means the motor isn't seized right? I'll see if I can get my hands on a compression tester. Thanks.

I've got spark and the crank turns. The spark plugs weren't wet though. Fuel line?

Try putting a teaspoon of gas in each cylinder. It should run for a few seconds on that if compression and spark is good. If it fires by adding gas then you know you aren't getting fuel through your fuel system. In those temps, if you've got water in your gas, it can freeze up your fuel lines and it won't run.

Is the fuel valve turned on? Have you pulled the plugs and used a flashlight to look in the cylinders for any obvious signs of damage?

Sorry for the delayed response. I put a teaspoon of fuel into each cylinder and it started right up. Thanks! I unattached the fuel line at the fuel valve and left the fuel valve open to see if gas would come out and it didn't. Since this is before the fuel pump does that mean that I don't have to worry about the fuel pump being frozen? What are the likely problems? Fuel filter? How do I go about troubleshooting? Thanks.

Do you have anywhere warm to bring it inside so the ice in the tank will melt? I'd start by siphoning out the gas. Elevate the rear of the sled so any water in the tank will pool down in the front. Put your siphon hose at the lowest point. Maybe catch some of that gas in a jar and see if you can see any water in it. Take a flashlight and look down into your gas tank. There should be a fuel line attached to a brass barb in the front of the tank in the bottom right (as you sit on the sled) corner. Make sure the fuel line is attached. The other end of that line should go to the back of the tank and have a weighted brass filter on it. If the filter has fallen off, the line might float and you won't get gas. If the line in the tank is good, but you have water in your gas I'd definitely pull the fuel pump off and thaw it out and drain it. You could leave it on and thaw it out with a hairdryer or heat gun. If you have gas to the pump at that time, once it's thawed just put the outlet line from the pump in a bottle and pull it over a few times until the water is gone. This will also tell you the pump works. Thaw the bowls on the bottoms of the carbs and pull the drain tubes off to drain the bowls. That should get rid of all the water in your system and you should be ready to rock.

I pulled the fuel line in the tank and at the end of the line was what looks like a metal filter the diameter of the fuel line is that what I should be seeing?

was the valve higher then the fuel level so it would not flow anyway?

Not yet, you have to prove you have a fuel supply to the pump first to rule it out. They do have a diaphragm that can tear & a hose to the crankcase that can crack

Thanks for all the help everyone. I siphoned the gas out of the tank. I forced air through the fuel line to make sure all the fuel was gone. I drained the carbs and gave everything time to dry out. Then I put everything back together and filled it with fuel. I pull started it a couple times and fuel was going through the line. It turned over once and lasted for a couple seconds and then it died. I couldn't get it to start again. I kept trying for a while until I was pretty sure I flooded the engine. I gave it a day and tried to start it again. It started once for a couple seconds and then I couldn't get it to start again. Any ideas? I noticed once of my carbs does have a line going to the airbox. Could this be a reason? Thanks.
