Another version of the weekend's events. Nate and I (Mostly Nate) put our story together to send to a friend of ours that was not able to make the trip with us.

The trip started as most snowmobile trips do. Bill was waiting on parts, putting sleds back together and packing Wednesday night. With the final beer/grocery run occurring after work on Thursday.

We got an early start Thursday thanks to some holiday hours. The original plan was to take Bill’s IQr, a backup IQ RMK and Nate’s ZRT 800. Lo and behold, the RMK that was just put back together the night before had sprung a coolant leak when it was time to load it onto the trailer. So it was left in the garage. But we had all the gear and beer loaded and on the road just before 4pm. The 5 hour journey was mostly uneventful, just Nathan trying to find constant 3G cell reception to finish homework and trying not doze off too much (only 4hrs of sleep; yea for homework!) We did hit some lake effect snow about 20miles out of Rockland and was stuck driving painfully slow in a whiteout behind a semi. Though, it was not long before we rolled into downtown (lol) Rockland and the apartment. The other yahoos were already assembled and the beer was flowing. We eventually unpacked and walked down to the local watering hole for a few more beers and pepper shots (don’t remind me; peppers soaked in vodka). It was a sad sight at Henry’s (The bar), which usually has an amazing smorgasbord of food Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. The chairs were all up on the table and a sign hung above the bar “no smorg this weekend.” Due to a water main break that left the town of Rockland without water for a week, they were not allowed to serve food until the health inspector deemed it safe. At least they fixed the break on Wednesday so we could take showers and make use of the indoor facilities. Seeing the sign was most disheartening to Rich (Orange Assault) who had been waiting all year long for a Henry’s fish fry. He complained about not getting the fish fry all night, and the next day, and the next…

The pepper shots made for a rough morning of getting out of bed and ready to go after noon to start pulling on POS Arctic Cats. Yea, we wasted over an hour trying to get the fat cat to run but it was not happening. So we dumped it off in the garage left it be. Thankfully Rich brought a spare sled AND was willing to let Nate ride it. Although an FST isn't much off an offtrail improvement over a ZRT800, we finally hit the trails. Weather was a little colder but almost perfect. No wind and blue bird skys. Bill is still kicking himself for not bringing the GoPro with Friday to capture all of the over the hood powder runs. Especially since we didn’t have to stray far Friday for some untracked powder. Played along the powerlines, carved up a field (Nathan ‘carved’) and worked on some small hill climbing. Best part was a couple short climbs through the woods to outlooks like in the picture. Being the first day, everyone kept it pretty tame and other than Rubi (Polaris ProX) almost running into a sub-station and a couple stuck sleds, there was no major excitement to report. So it was back to the apartment for some dry clothes and work on POS Arctic Cats. Of course, it’s not good to work on an empty stomach, so we filled up on Rich’s famous meatballs (Rich’s balls are the best J). Since Bill’s sled wasn’t running great, he joined Nathan in the garage. Who would have thought, got all 4999 pulls on that POS Arctic Cat done in the morning and one pull at night started right up, game on! Bill finished his tinkering and we headed back to ‘play’ poker. I quote ‘play’ because it was more like making two small donations to Jason’s (Polaris 800 Storm) beer money.

Saturday had great potential, I think this was our earliest start of the trip. We were ready to go by 10am. We left the fat cat in the garage to keep it warm over night, but it started only on one cylinder and died about 30sec after running. Crap. Another 30min of playing with ether and we threw in the towel again. Back to the FST for today’s adventure. After a quick run for gas, Bill and Nathan met up with the rest of the group at a nice bowl for some jumping and hill climbing. Bill missed both hill climbs on camera from Rich (Polaris Assault) and Wolfy (Polaris Indy 500) which resulted in rolling the sleds. The one video does have him climbing to help Rich. Next we pounded some diamonds (emphasis on pounded, those were some whooped out trails)to reach a long climb through the woods up Oak Bluff. Was a bad idea for Nathan to follow Wolfy, as she got stuck on the trail going up, which stopped the FST and Jason’s Storm. After some pushing and pulling, we had Wolfie on her way. Next was Nate’s turn, being stopped going uphill he naturally trenched right in. A few more pulls and Nate was on his way to the top. High hopes were what we had for Jason and his Storm after all of the talk about the Storm being ready for anything. But alas, he trenched in faster than the FST! Lesson learned: make your own trail while attempting to conquer Oak Bluff or get stuck behind someone else. Eventually we all made it to the top and the ones that were able, tooled around the woods and nearby bluff. Bill’s got some helmet video of the run up from the hood of his sled. After that, it was off to find a large bowl for some jumping and big drop action. This is where the rest of the pictures were taken and Bill has some good video, including a couple of fails. Rubi managed to break a shock support in his suspension do to all of the big dropping onto a flat landing and had to take it easy on the way back. With the sun setting, we headed back to the apartment, garage and POS Arctic Cats. On the way Bill, Rubi and Gerbil (white RMK) stopped to make a trail repair on Rubi’s sled so that the bent part would stop rubbing on his track. While finishing the repair and readying to leave a group of riders came down the hill and flew by us going at least 80mph, shaking their heads and flicking us off as if we were all parked in the middle of the trail and blocking their path. Must have been FIBs. After we got back to Rockland there was a small detour to eat some of Mitch’s (Arctic Cat M8) wife’s lasagna at the other apartment over in Mass City. Since Rubi was joining Bill and Nathan in the garage, it wasn’t long before the whole gang came by to heckle. We had the carbs off the fat cat and thought it was the fuel pump that went out, since one of the carbs Nathan drained in the morning did not refill. So he pulled the supply lines and stuck them in a water bottle while Bill pull over the engine. WOW. Talk about mello yellow. Absolute crap came out (mind you, I topped off the well running sled two weeks ago). So we pumped out two bottles worth of gas and also had to clear out the float valve as those were sticking. By then it was 2am, so we had last call at the apartment and crashed for the night.

For the final day Sunday, we didn’t head too far for fun. Followed a old railroad to some power lines and a field. Nathan attempted carving with the fat cat, but realized it was probably worse than the FST. He did manage some hill climbing and most jumps went well (see the video, GOPRO007). Bill thought the fat cat can’t be that hard to carve and offered Nate to swap sled for a bit (video GOPRO006). Immediately Bill realized, this was a very fat cat! Even though he did get it to carve, what you can’t see in the video is Bill leaning as far as he can to the left just to pick up the right ski. Not long after swapping sleds back Bill’s started to run ever crappier than it had the first two days and started running on only one cylinder. Bill gave up on his sled and headed back to the shop to work on it (thinking Nate must have saved some of that bad gas and poured it in his tank!) The actual cause of the poor running condition of the engine is yet to be determined.

The rest of the remaining group headed to the next field to play. Wolfy and Nathan found themselves alone after a while and started looking for the rest. Found them in a small valley with Rubi in 18in of water. After smoking a belt trying to get out, we used a team effort to pull him out. There, we found a 4in dia rock stuck between the tunnel and track, and it already left a hole in the cooler. So Nathan got to put the fat cat to work and pull him back to the road to wait for the trailer. Nathan headed back to let Bill know and basically it was time to start packing and watch the Super Bowl. After a nights restlessness, thanks in part to a dog that can bark for over 10 hours throughout the night, we made the trek back to Mayville.

Haven't edited my videos yet, just threw the raw footage up on youtube.

Third picture from the end looks like Jay is doing a Bobo-style squatch sighting reenactment.

Jay, how far down the powerlines past where we went last year did you find that area in the pictures? I rode some logging roads south of the powerlines, but didn't get to touch most of them. There's lots of uncharted territory in there that might be good.

Oh it was good! untouched virgin powder! The powerlines have a drop off just across the tracks from the gravel pit we hit last year. Go around that and the next two 2-tracks on the left is where we were at.

The last four pics was the end of the line for us. pic #5 was about 1/3 down a hill. our sleds were 20-30 yards past the top. Pics #6&7 was me working my way to the bottom. The last one was me resting after climbing back up. I should have left my pack and helmet.

Here are some pics I got off my phone of the action on the group ride.

Yea...after a fairly long break and forgetting a shitload of things...I'll continue my ramble.

Day 2: For breakfast, we got served by some chick with a 'stache that rivaled some slednutz' member's 'staches! I guess it takes a special kind to survive the UP!

I got heckled a bunch for not dominating my breakfast as well as a 200lb+ dude. This didn't exactly hurt my feelings, beings as I only broke 120 pounds after the 3rd day of the trip!

The ZRTrouble did not cooperate in starting, and the Wolfsled took it's example and proceeded to run like shit for 5 full miles of throttle and choke feathering.

We did fairly stellar for finding some good terrain on the first riding day! There were some mostly untouched powerlines to be had, and the Nutz slammed the ever-living shit out of them until the majority of the alcohol wore off, and serious hangover status caused a severe state of pussification, where we went back to the apartment and started drinking again.

Before that happened, I did try to carve and jump Stormy. I accomplished both, but the endeavor kicked my ass quite badly. Maybe not quite so badly as Harry's "special olympics" video, but that sled is a bastard and a half!

I got one minor stuck, which Posersledder documented, and then helped me out. I also learned that I should probably invest in a 2 dollar loop of rope, so I can actually do some side to side weight transfer on the Wolfsled. On those mild powerlines, the powder had me drifting (heavily) consistently to the left.

Night fell, and I proceeded to (again!) make a drunken ass out of myself. The first poker game occurred and Harry won the shit out of it. I believe a few MNian members were too cheap to put in the five bucks, so we watched shitty TV.

I had some of Gerbils pictures so figured I'd post some more lol. Was surprised to see Stormys skis in the air. Rubi, if you ever get rid of those skis I want them.

I failed for some reason.

Nate was showing Gerbil's pictures to some guys at work who were just in Houghton a few weeks prior (hard core diamond pounders). As they're looking through them one of the guys goes "looks like some good riding, but wait....is that...a storm? And an Indy 500? those aren't offtrail sleds !?!"
