Default Who here does grass drag racing?

I should have 3 day weekends this summer and I want to make sure I put my 800 to good use, but I've never done an official racing. I wanted to do the Duluth Hilldrags but didn't find out about it soon enough to plan for it.

I raced my neibor around his house with our riding lawnmowers once. My badass 17hp MTD one lunger kicked his Simplicities (twin Kohler) ass.

Does that count?

I'm just lookin for some advice or thoughts. I might throw a short track under my rmk and stud it, but whats the best stud patern? Follow the mfg's directions or is there a better pattern?

And for screwin around tuning(possibly for racing) could a "small" car radiator mounted out front work well enough to keep things cool?

your cooling is enough for farting around.

remove your hyfax and add wheels

jet down some,

gear down some.

studding you will want to run chisels with double backers. they use to have titanium cleats/paddles that you could bolt on but i dont think they are legal anymore.

ok, I just naturally assumed I'd need more cooling since my sled already overheats on hard packed trails.

And i should gear it down even more than what I have it at now? 19-41 or 18-40 (dont remember)

just make a cool down kit to hook up after every run..

I would love to build a sled for grass drags too!!

THE race guru achotrod made a pretty simple cool down rig pretty cheap, you'd have to search the race topics over at SF to find pics of it...

Ya, as much of a douchebag as he is, he knows how to set up for racing. I figured I'd need a cool down cart if I were to get real involved with this but i just wanted something simple for screwing around and tuning, like an extra radiator. I think I'll just borrow the rear suspension and stock track off the old XLT for grass runs. Just gotta find a bunch of cheap studs for it.

I already have the spare 700 motor if i wanted to run in a 700cc class, maybe i'll just be on the lookout for a cheap 700 race head....

Sorry to burst your bubble power, but achotrodtodd doesn't do the setup on his race sled, he has someone do it for him.

oh right i forgot about that, local AC dealer or somethin. I just need to hijack the design of his cool down cart that now i'd assume came from the same place

for grass you would be better to put your 800 in the indy.

gearing down to 19-40 or lower isnt a bad starting point.

you will be able to work your way down on jetting a lot.

I know, by the time I was done riding I had it running nearly perfect. Was riding in between 30-40* temps, idle was a little rich as it would start to load up, but I was able to race down the portage 2-3 miles WOT checked the plugs after and they were perfect. So now its just a matter of adjusting linearly for temp right? (except for dropping the pilots a little more)

oh, the if you dont have one then use what you got i guess. i thought you had one.

for jetting one thing you can do is raise the engagement up to around the 6000 rpm area. that way once you clean the engine out on the stand and set it on the ground you hold it just below the engagement rpm, that helps keep the engine clean so when you hammer the gas you just go.

no big need to lean out the bottom end. you will never be there other than starting it and warming it up.

The original spring/weights i got with the primary would let it engage at 5500 and then it would really take off. Now with the EPI black and 66's it engages in the high around 4k, but if I pin it off the start it hits 7900rpm at the same time the throttle lever hits the bar

Thats funny Jeff, I can see it now!!!!
Achotrodtodd pulls the sled to the line, anxiously awaiting for the light to go green. Thoughts flying through Todds head, Pipes-Check, Clutching-Check, Jetting-Check, Gearing-Check. The linesman acknowledge that the racers are ready and the light flashes green. The 440 erupts into a fury of Horse Power that is only equal to Ultrastud pounding back 12 Monster Energy Drinks!
The little 440 leaps from the starting line with the ski's in the air and volley dirt and rocks emanating from under the heavily studded track!
Just then the force from the 440 leaving the line so hard throw's Todd to the rear of the seat causing the teather to streach to its release point! At a blink of an eye off comes the teather, the engine dies in mid air and the ski's come crashing to the ground with a thunderous slap! Before Todd can react, he finds himself flying through the air looking down at the shinny hood of his little 440! There was a thunderous Crash as Todd strikes the ground with a yardsale of Tekvest and goggle parts strown across the track!
The crowd laugh's and points at the little 440 that could have been a hero!

Blaa Blaa Blaa

Hey $1K ain't a bad deal, especially to set her up as a grass dragger.

she is absolutely perfectly rideable as she sits right now. Betty would be a KICKASS drag sled. (er, with some serious jetting and cool down help. LOL)

But, I've got someone whose gonna take her in a few weeks, so you LOSE!.

LMAO
