Default VES

My sled has Ves on it and I was wondering if someone knows what I should do as far as the spring inside after I do some motor work?
I've heard and read articles that say, even the stock spring doesn't open all the time at altitude.
I know the basic idea of the design but does it really help the motor out that much?
