Default how to set timing

for the average guy that doesnt have a degree wheel and dial indicator with the specs for piston travel vs degrees at the crank lets do this the old way.

for whatever reason you want to change or reset your timing or maybe you overhauled your engine and didnt make a mark on the stator plate.

first off there is a line on the crank case at the top of the radious of the stator plate area, on the stator plate there is usually a triangle or line as well. simply line them up. if you cant find lines you can usually see where the old bolt marks were.
then all you need to get is the specs for your machine. it will be something like 3200 rpm that you run to check the timing at. on the flywheel there is usually 5 lines, 1 long one and 2 short ones on each side of it. usually each short line is 2 degrees.
have a buddy get the sled to spec rpm, shine the timing light on it and see where you are at, there is a hole in the recoil housing with a pionter on it, you will clearly see what line is lined up. if the long line is lined up you are at stock settings. the lines before the long line are advance and the lines after are retard. so if you are hitting the first line after the long line you are 2 degrees retarded.

now instead of guessing what 2 degrees are, you have the marks on the flywheel, so line up 1 line on the flywheel to a point at the top of the stator plate and on the crank case, now you also have a 2 degree line infront of the long line on the flywheel so make a mark where that line crosses the plate.
now turn the plate back until the forward line now lines up with the long line mark is on the case. you just advanced your timing 2 degrees.
put it back together and double check yourself.
