This isn't looking very promising for these riders. I haven't been able to find any "new" news on whether they've gone back in yet or not. Terrible tragedy, condolences to the families.

These riders are reported to all be experienced Mtn. riders fully equipped with all gear and experience. We can only hope more survived and spent the night holed up till sunrise.

6 of the 8 missing have been recovered, deceased. Search continues for remaining 2.

12 sledders for 7 day period Canada/US

Anyone still have doubts about backcountry danger right now?

The way things are setting up out west I am sure I won't what to out climb anyone regardless of what I am riding.

Proverbs 1:22
"How long will you simple ones love your simple ways?
How long will mockers delight in mockery
and fools hate knowledge?

Weather is being weirder than normal. Yesterday was a heat wave, mid to upper 40's all over. Snow melting, mess everywhere. This morning wake up to a healthy 3-4" of fresh covering all the mud. And that's down in Gillette, no idea yet what the mountains got. We need a few thaw - freeze cycles to help heal the snow and form up a base, but not so dramatic of a change it makes it worse.

The whole story about the Avy... Scary stuff and probably the toughest decision anyone could make.

I'm glad you read that thread, I was just about to post link as well.

Anyone with any thoughts of riding the mountains should give that a read.

Also as a side note, it pales in comparison to the BC accident, but another sledder, a young 14 year old lost his life yesterday in UT.

The only avalanche I was ever in was like that one. A cornice broke off almost a mile above us. If it was winter, the slide would have been faster and we'd probably have been killed. The wet spring snow made the slide move a lot slower. We heard it coming and ran to safety. After the slide, it was sobering to see our tracks disappearing under the runout of a slide that was 8 to 12 feet high. You can't just look at where you're at, you've got to look above too. After that incident, I took it upon myself to learn about avalanche terrain. Yeah, we had beacons. Big deal. "A functioning beacon just means that the beacon will be recovered at some point in time. It isn't a talisman that keeps you safe." Right now, in the Rockies, there's now way I'd go near ANY potential runout zone, and I wouldn't touch a slope that's over 20 to 25 degrees.

I'm going to take it you mean 20 - 25 for entire rise/fall of slope, say a mogul. Riding the flanks at 20 degrees when the remainder is 30+ above it is just as bad as riding the whole thing. Crossing/sitting below a slope nearing 30+ degrees is a high risk right now, don't do it.

BTW Rubi, I know you and some others know the above statement, but others riders don't, the statement was meant for them.

In a nutshell, if you aren't experienced in the backcountry, if you don't have Avy gear and know its use, if you haven't had some type of Avy training, if you aren't familiar with the terrain or with someone who is, if you haven't checked the Avy level/weather report, just stay away from the mountains for now. It's just not worth it for the risk you'll be taking.

The night it appeared 8 guys were mising on the news I thought shit, I hope they make it out alive. Not an hour later a couple trucks pulled up to this motel and got a few rooms. We started bullshitting and they said they were on there way to find those buried 8 snowmobiler's. I said you mean the ones there still looking for? They said Yea, but there all dead, they lost their beacons in the avalanche. I found out later all the guys were from sparwood, where my dad had grown up, and he lost 2 good buddy's in that avalanche..

Ride safe guys..I wish theres never any other storys like this, think about how many lifes are ruined because they wanted to get alittle seat time in...
