Default Horns Spring Riding

James and I headed to the Horns on Sunday for a spring ride. Still plenty of snow, but unlike any I've ever ridden before. Late morning you'd be riding thru slush and able to carve just fine, next second you've hit a solid wall of white ice. Needless to say, more than a few stucks and unplanned dismounts. Windshield on Escape will require some new retainers before next season. Probably the final ride on this side for me this year. Sleds did great until afternoon heat got to them. Had to stop and cool down Escape on the way out, seems it dislikes 50 degree weather.

Trailhead @ Deer Haven

9600 feet

Small slide from cornice drop

Mohawk still lives, sunburn sucks.....

First stuck of morning(Note left ski angle, no rock there, ICE)

Meadow Playground

Followed tracks 1/2 mile back into/thru trees to find an untouched meadow.

All in all it was another great day in the mountains. Looking forward to maybe riding there again next season a few times. Trying to find out if any snow remains at home for a final ride there this season. If not, this ride will probably finish it for me. I see no point in tearing up sleds to ride slush.

If you want to see the rest of the photos or see the larger sizes, you'll find them in my PhotoBucket

That first stuck picture is funny, he's on his hands and knees but still on top of snow lol. That your son? Like the mohawk, just gave Shane one yesterday lol.

Snow was crusted bad when we started, softened up later in morning. Hyfax were fine, I dropped scratchers, James followed my tracks. Engine cooling was another story. I wasn't getting enough snow on cooler to keep temps down.

Snow was weird, soft in 1 spot then instantly rock-hard. Had quite a few unintentional dismounts from sleds coming to abrupt halt. Yes James is my son on the RMK. The Mo is going to be my doo of choice for the winter months anyway. I love it, no sweaty head to ice up anymore.

The sunburn today does suck though.........

Welcome sleddinggirl, riding the mountains is a little easier for me, I live out here. Find a coffee can and throw loose change in it every day, you'll be surprised how much you'll have at the end of the year. Use that as a start for a trip west.
