Default 2001 Yamaha SXR - Thoughts

OK, so I picked up my new M and can't see myself riding the Apex all that much. I have a guy who wants to give me a 2001 SXR in great condition and some cash. I am going to say $5k and his SRX for my Apex. My Apex is studded, a-arm protectors, skid plate, nose-windshield-tank-saddle bags, Apex Mountain riser, stiffer rear spring and the biggest thing... an extended warranty till 2011. Anyway, does anyone have any good/bad to say about the SXR?

Good deal with the warranty.

Not a Yami girl here, but what little input I will offer..................out of the entire Yami line-up until the recent years, the SRX was the best looker they ever put out!

I love my Apex but just can't see myself riding it much. I still want a trail sled just in case I decide to run the trails and don't want to take out the M. I looked up 2001 SRXs on Ebay and definitely like the look. I hear that the Yami triple is an awesome motor. I wonder how much gas they eat.

SRX, sorry. The SXR is the Kawi jetski unless there is a Yami sled... <shrug>

I don't have an first hand experience with them, but I did see a few on the trails. Sound pretty wicked. Over the years I've heard:

Great Triple platform
Heavy
Front suspension blows
Indestructible.

Mine isn't definite yet... but a possibility. Great triple platform sounds great, it can't be any heavier than the Apex, I can always add some Fox shocks to the front, indestructible is good with me.

the srx's are great sleds and good on gas, but once there is any bumps on the trail you are going to miss the apex.

I guess i would keep the sled you have, even if you only ride it a few miles each year it will last you 20 years.
an srx has no real value, it doesnt matter what ebay or others say, around here you could barely give one away.

If the trails were that rough I'd be off trail so it doesn't matter. The Apex is more for others or a backup/trail sled. I can't justify keeping a $7000 sled that will barely get used.... as much as I'd want to. I am trying to wipe out debt too.

Eventually I could trade it and get something better IF I felt the need. It will be hard to give up the Apex but I can always drop the scratchers and run the M8 if I needed.

first of all they made an SRX700 and also a SX700R the SX has the same engine and chassis. but is single piped. doesn't run near as well, at least not until you install bender pipes.

second these sleds really aren't that great. ride is extremely rough. and prone to motor problems. we have two in the shop right now. one that cut the crankcase damn near in half with the center rod. though to be fair. that sled was abused (grass dragged) though other is getting a center cylinder.

they do run very strong. one of the strongest factory 700's i have ever ridden. but be careful.

SXR were a different motor than the SRX. The SXR's were single piped and didnt have powervalves.

SRX's were strong motors, 140+ HP stock. Like everyone said its not going to be a cushy ride at all but fast as hell. I have never head of any kind of motor problems with the 00 and later SRX's. 98-99 had some crank issues.

Indestructible, great fuel mileage and goes like a raped ape. Weighs about 530- 540 lbs. It will beat the shit out of you in the rough. For groomed twisty trail running, nothing can touch it.

get the srx. then in the future you can put a price 1000 top end on it. got to watch a guy run one. full bodies sled with pump gas and oil injection still on the sled. the thing was mean and very drivable. you would flat out kill all f cats you came across with it!!

Assuming this discussion is in fact regarding an SRX and NOT the turd SXR..Ive logged more than a few miles on 3 different SRX's. Enjoyed ever minute of them. In the snow my XC7 would hang with an 02 and outrun his 99. On the hardpack it would walk away from the 700 and my XCR8 (got pretty sick of that happening last year) easier than I would have liked. On the river my XCR8 would eat them up for breakfast and the guy refused to waterskip over any stretch over 20 feet.

The 02's are the most valuble but I cant tell them apart. Nice seating position, they sound cool as hell and are really quick. Ive read several reports of guys complaining about the ride and honestly I cant tell it apart from the extra 10. Its certainly no worse.

Sounds like your either getting sick of payments or have an opportunity to get decent money out of something you may struggle to sell later. To me it sounds like a great deal. There are worse things in life that will happen to you than having to step down to an SRX. Jon is going to call me soon after writting this to send a mercinary to cut off my nuts but I actually prefer the SRX over the XCR8. But, I am a Polaris guy and thats the way it is.

I have lots of respect for the srx, any 700 triple that can run with the big boys is fine in my book.
