Default Winter Storm Warning!!!

I just heard a local meteorologist say that we could get 6" to 14" of new snow today and tonight. I'll ride that! Who needs base? By the way, I'm not in Idaho anymore. That forecast is for West Central Minnesota!

Well, they've changed the Winter Storm Warning to a Blizzard warning now. 7" to 11" ADDITIONAL accumulation could fall tonight in our area. It looks like 6 or 7 inches have fallen so far.

BTNF Western Wyoming Avalanche Bulletin

Jackson Ranger District, POB 1689, Jackson WY 83001
Issued: Fri April 25, 2008 4:22 PM

SITUATION

Since early Thursday morning the upper elevations of the Teton Range have received about 10 inches of new snow. The Togwotee Pass area and Blind Bull Summit in the Wyoming Range have received about six inches of new snow. Temperatures at 9,500 feet during this period have been in the teens to low 20s. Ridge crest winds have been southwest to northwest at 15 to 25 miles per hour with higher gusts.

This new snow has accumulated on well-developed crusts.

FORECAST FOR Saturday April 26, 2008

Periods of snow are likely until midnight with several additional inches of new snow possible. Clearing skies are expected on Saturday with temperatures in the mountains rising into the 30s. Winds will be northwesterly at 20 to 25 miles per hour overnight and decrease to 5 to 15 miles per hour on Saturday.

The general avalanche hazard is expected to MODERATE above an elevation of 8,500 feet. Soft surface slabs up to two feet in depth have been formed by southwest to northwest winds. These slabs could be human triggered on steep wind loaded slopes. Loose point slides are likely to release naturally on steep sunlit aspects. Below 8,500 the general avalanche hazard is expected to be LOW.

TREND FOR SUNDAY AND MONDAY

Dryer and warmer conditions will prevail as a ridge of high pressure builds over the area. The potential for humans to trigger soft surface slabs on steep, wind loaded upper elevation slopes will persist through the period. Natural loose snow slides are possible on steep sunlit aspects.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Extreme: Wide spread areas of unstable snow exist and avalanches are certain on some slopes.
Backcountry travel should be avoided.

High: Mostly unstable snow exists on a variety of aspects and slope angles.
Natural avalanches are likely. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended.

Considerable: Dangerous unstable slabs exist on steep terrain on certain aspects.
Human triggered avalanches probable. Natural avalanches possible.

Moderate: Areas of unstable snow exist. Human triggered avalanches are possible.
Larger triggers may be necessary as the snowpack becomes more stable. Use caution.

Low: Mostly stable snow exists. Avalanches are unlikely except in isolated pockets.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They had completed advisories for this season until these storms rolled in. Looks like Springs been postponed......LOL

So has anyone got any news, how much did ya get?

We got another inch or so in Gillette, not enough to do anything with. Plus ground is so warm it's melting pretty fast.

I'd say there has to be at least a foot of snow, but it's real hard to tell because it's blowing around so much. I had my car completely clean of snow last night at midnight, so you can see from the picture that we got even more since then, and it was deep already last night. The Indy 400 is ready to roll. I can't seem to remember whether that sled is ready to ride, or if I was half way through a bunch of summer projects on it. It seemed like all the parts were on it, and it did fine lapping the backyard, so I hope I'm ready to go. Now I just have to figure out where all my riding gear is packed away. See you folks later! Gerbil and I are going riding!

Statement as of 3:07 PM MDT on April 30, 2008

... Winter Storm Warning in effect from 6 am Thursday to 12 PM MDT
Friday...

The National Weather Service in Rapid City has issued a Winter
Storm Warning... which is in effect from 6 am Thursday to 12 PM
MDT Friday. The Winter Storm Watch is no longer in effect.

Rain will develop over the area this evening and continue into early
Thursday morning. The rain will begin switching to snow over
northeast Wyoming Thursday morning. Along with the snow... gusty
northwest will create areas of blowing and drifting snow... with near
blizzard conditions expected at times. The snow will continue
Thursday night into Friday. Storm total accumulations will range
from 6 to 12 inches across northeast Wyoming by Friday afternoon.

A Winter Storm Warning means severe winter conditions are
expected or occurring.

Guess Winter intends to stay awhile. Now who's got a sled and gear on this side of WY ? The Bighorns have been getting slammed all afternoon.

EDIT: They missed it a little, already spitting snow mixed w/rain.

NOAA is calling for 17" to 30" of snowfall in the next two days in The Black Hills. That's a lot of snow for May. Anybody ever ridden The Black Hills?

Not yet, but I'm thinking really hard about bringing at least 1 sled back over here to Gillette and possibly giving them a try.

I know it sucks for the majority, but this was current snow depths this AM.
