Default Calculate your own tuned pipes for 2-stroke engines

Credit goes to Triple650indy. Great guy, will help anyone any way he can.

Click on the link, the document will open in a new window:

2-Stroke Pipe Calculator

You obviously need a few things to accomlish this:

1. You need a port map of the cylinder to get the port width, height, and timing.
2. The "Estimated Horsepower" is what you expect to gain from the new pipe you're creating plus the HP before the pipe. It was explained to me as a best "guesstimate"
3. 99.9% of the time the BMEP, Speed of Sound, Exhaust Temp, Tuned Length, Effective Diameter and constants are not modified by you, the user
4. A two stage is simpler and not as efficient, a three stage is more complex and creates more HP.

Wow who did you get this terrible information from. LOL.

Anyways just to clarify the three stage pipe will give you a smoother powerband whereas the two stage pipes will by peaky.

The horsepower number helps calculate out the BMEP which then can be used to calculate the temperature and the speed of the pressure waves in the pipes.

650, did you get to make a setof pipes yet?? it would be neat to make a set for whatever sled you have, by clutching changes you will be able to see the power gains of the pipes. it would be neat to make a set and see how close they turn out.

when I am building the 1029 I have to keep track of everthing in the motor as far as timing in degrees for opening, closing and duration, head cc and compression ratio. so it will be neat to plug that stuff in next fall and see how close they come to the blueprints for the current pipes!

Well Madcow unfortunately I haven't the time or the money right now. But if any of you try to use this calculator you need to give me feedback. I can tweak the formulas a touch if multiple tests show the same thing. Maybe this summer I will start taking on a project like this. I have a spare 650 motor sitting in my garage I just need to get some crank work done to get it running again. Then make a set of pipes for it and fit them in my old indy chassis and then see how much power they really make.

Also I noticed the link is broken so here is the link I keep on my personal domain. Which should always be available.

Also keep in mind pipe building is a trial and error process, certain bends you make to fit a pipe in a chassis can actually decrease or increase the power output of a pipe. Also the basic understanding of how pipes work is a plus! I will probably make a wiki on it later.

If I get the time this summer I might try and make my own pipes, custom order pipes are too damn expensive

Set aside plenty of time. I was amazed at how big of a job it was to convert a set of pipes designed for a motor with x amount of angle to fit the sled with a different angle. We are only talking maybe 7 degrees here (or less). It threw everything off. I had to do easilly 3 times the cutting and welding I anticipated. I think the cheapest way to build a set of pipes is have someone like bikeman mock them up to your specifications and do the finish welding yourself.

you can get blanks, they are a J bend pipe, and unlike the factory stamped pipes they are round. refitting a set of fitted pipes sucks big time. starting from a straight pipe or J pipe is a lot easier.

heres the kit I got. http://priceperf.com/kits/pipes.htm
