Default Gearing, top-speed calculators, and good/bad combinations:

Here are some calculators for top speed and gear ratios. Plug in the pertinent info for what you need and it does it for you.

These are in Excel format so you will need either Excel or an open-source program to view them.

GearCalc2.xls
GearCalc.xls
Gearing_chart_file.xls

JUST ADDED:

A ratio chart that gives a breakdown of all good/bad combos. This is in MSWord. Credit goes to RogerBzXCR.

Sure, anyone can use them once they are setup, but do you know how to modify or create some of that stuff?

the good bad gearing ratio's is a handy little tool, just one question though it may be a dumb one.

I noticed at the top that it had the polaris models listed. Can I still somewhat go by the good/bad ratios for my 440 sno pro?

That is an excellant question, but I don't have an answer. Hopefully Madcow will hop on and give you an idea.

You'll probably use the ones that are the closest to your center to center, which you'll need to measure unless you know it off hand.

From what I've been told, those ratios cause too much friction (you'll smoke belts quick), and they're too hard on the chain causing premature wear. Use the column that has the center to center closest to what you have, and err on the side of caution.

thanks, I wanted to save that one and the pipe maker to my computer but I dont have excel and I am not going to pay for it at this point in time either. when I want to make a set of pipes I will get the info to riley and see what the pipe maker says for pipes vs the engine maker.

not sure about the hard on belts but yeah he can pick one that is close on CtC distance and follow it. for gearing you want as little of a loop around the tightener as possible. a little slack in the chain instead of being tight is also better. you dont want the chain slopping around or string tight.

the tall gearing ratios give belt burning not from the load of the sled persay but from the clutching has to be changed to accomidate the new load on the belt. for most trail sleds you dont get enough traction to run into a problem when testing. but when you are in deep snow or on a hot day and the snow is heavy and sticky then you will get smoke if you dont alter the clutching a little.

I was the one that told him about the belt thing and what you wrote was what i was trying to explain to him.

If you do not have MS Office, or just wont pay their prices to use buggy programs, here's an alternative that works great;

Sorry if this is stupid but on the good/bad gear combos.. It says blue can be used safely and red isnt a good combo. But arent some in black? What do the black ones mean? is it safe or no? I was thinking of gearing my sled down a little and trying to figure out what i should do. I have 64 pitch chain and 11 wide. Not sure what tooth gears i have right now i would have to check. I pretty much jus do ditch banging so would gearing it down be a good idea or no? Any help would be nice and if anyone has some gears that might work for me let me know.. Preferably the 64 pitch and 11 wide seeing as how i jus bought a brand new chain. Im assuming if the gears were different pitch i could jus use a chain with that pitch and everything would work right or no?
