Default Steel Sled deck Plans ?

OK, I'm participating in a thread over on another forum on this subject, thought I'd check here for ideas/opinions.

Has anyone built or seen handmade/homemade sled deck?
If so, what was your experience/opinion of it?
Anyone have any sketch's/drawings of plans?

If deal goes thru I'll be sporting a 1998 F-250 this winter. Part of the reasoning behind getting it is to haul sleds in mtns. A sled deck would be ideal for use here. I've started some sketch's and material lists to gather materials to get started as soon as I take possession of truck.

I make this happen I'll get pics of process and scan in finished version of sketch's.

I plan to get a pickup and sleddeck in the next two years. It is really the only way to go.

Well I'm buying the truck mainly to pull my RV, but it'll do double duty as sled hauler in winter. Only logical to put deck on it and haul them high and clean.

Dealers are asking anywhere from $2500 and up for a purchased deck. I think I can buy materials, holddowns, and ramps for under $800. Assembly I'll do myself, I still remember how to weld.

Deck actually fits above standard bed. Legs/supports hold weight from floor of bed.

Yeah that's one of the higher end (pricewise) decks. My deck will be bolted solid to floor and will use ramps for loading. I'm actually thinking of combining 2 - 6' aluminum ramps to make 1 - 10' extendable ramp for loading/unloading. Ramps are rated at 1250 lbs. when used single, unsure of whether rating would drop that much by combining and reducing angle.

Not sure what ramp maker uses as safety margin. Ramp may actually handle 20-25% more than published rating. If it works it would be a lightweight, portable way of loading.

What about the wind drag, and weight being up higher, like the roll?

VE I would check on Aluminum prices when you're checking on steel prices. From what I've heard aluminum isn't much more expensive than steel right now.

Wind drag isn't gonna be much more than pulling 2 place trailer, especially in mtns. Deck is going on 3/4 ton truck, roll should be manageable

Welding the alum. is more of a pain, plus strength when running over some of these FS roads, with flexing and jolts it will take makes me lean toward steel.

if its on the back of a cummins it dont matter about wind drag!!

if you are going to make one why not go all the way!! make a tube frame that you can set onto the floor of the truck. this will also support the deck and the hydralics. get a 12v pump and two way ram from a snow plow setup or old small truck dump setup. or use a winch and when it is all the way up there is still some slant on the support legs. so you reverse the winch and the table goes back and then tilts down to the ground!!!

how cool would that be? drive the sleds up the ramp and park, then go up and hit a button and whurr whurr whurr.. the ramps lifts up, levels out and sets into place!!

from my goofing around loading sleds on trailers i have fallen off the side to many times to try it on the back of a truck. I like to jump onto the trailer and land in place. not always are the skis in the right spot, so one side falls off the trailer.

At one time I was looking for an aluminum trailer with a damaged axle do I could just remove the box from my truck in the winter and replace it with the aluminum deck. This would keep it lower than a standard sled deck and still serve the same purpose.

I'm still looking, just not as vigorously as before.
