Default Hey madcow

I have a 99 sks 700 with Hymark heads, SLP pipe/can, VF3 reeds, and a gutted airbox

this is what SLP recomended as a base clutch kit. any thoughts to improve what's there or should i go with that?

Primary spring SLP Black/Red P.N. 40-68
Primary weight 10-62 P.N. 1321586 (good), 65 Lightning Weight P.N. 40-25 (best)
Secondary helix 52/34 Progressive style P.N. 40-52/34 or Dial-A-Spring P.N. 43-52/34
Secondary spring Silver/Blue P.N. 7041646, pre load setting #3

I personally like more weight and smaller helix for the twins. riley is running stock secondary with some heavier weights and it pulls very good.

but, I also like big helix's for some good bang out of the hole and corners. stay with the silver blue secondary spring, for the most part it sounds like a good setup. what do they charge for the 10-62's and the helix

Default Hey madcow

i believe the 10-62's come stock on the sks correct me if i'm wrong. i already have a set, and i had a 52-34 machined from a friend of mine, he works for polaris so i have a few different pitched helixes to work with. 52-34, 50-38 a 48-34 and i believe i have either a 52-34 or 52-36 outside.

i'm running the 52-34 in the sled right now with silver/blue secondary, stock primary spring and 10-60's for weights, i love the set-up but the thing will turn 8600 rpm which is out of the powerband for the sks.

you need to be at 64 grams. and your rpms will come down to 8g's with the rest of it as is.

they should get you close. you might need to do some fine tunning with spring adjustments?

If hes running 8,600 revs with 62g weights - it would not be enough to bring down to 8k with 64g. You may have to either change the spring in the primary or go with 66g weights to bring the revs down. WL

Reading these threads are always pretty cool, this is one of the reasons I came here. I love to read what you guys have to say. I am trying to learn about all of this tuning stuff. Does anyone have say a diagram that shows what all of this stuff is that you guys are talking about?

Hey Madcow...

time to revisit this thread.

Right now i'm running a SLP Black/red primary spring with 10-60 weights.

SLP 40-50/34 for a helix w/ the standard silver/blue in the secondary in the #3 spot.

Now i know with the red/black it's too stiff for the 10-60's so i may throw the Blue primary back on.

but when i'm crusing along and gun it, it will only hit 74-7500. and then after a while climb back up to 8k

never had this issue before. what you think it could be? not enough spring tension on the secondary?

how do your buttons look, with a silver blue on 3 you should check them buttons a couple times a year.

chances are the primary spring has gone soft.
i wouldnt take the silver blue to the tightest setting, i would drop weight and then run it at a looser setting first.

slp's kit is a quicker kit, big helix and lighter weights for that quick burst. but for off trail i wouldnt mind seeing you try a 46-38 or straight 36 or 38 helix, polaris black secondary or even the silver blue and then 60 or 62 grams. the softer secondary spring will allow more shift out, the smaller helix angle has more natural belt bite, the bigger weights will make the sled smoother.

bring it to ernies on saturday and we can do some tunning. I will bring my tools and parts and you can bring your parts.

Buttons are brand new, and the primary spring has only 1 season on it. which was 600 miles or so. take the clutches apart every year and leave the spring tension off them.

i have i believe a 50/36 i can throw in and try.

would you start with the Silver blue in #2 or 3? i know 3 is the max i would go with the spring.

if the springs are good, and its a new problem, it might be the type of snow, maybe since there is no base to the snow the sled is spinning, getting into overshift?

whats the smallest helix you have. for diagnostics get rid of the 50 degree starting angel.

on the bigger sleds i had good luck with a straight 34 or 36 with a black spring on hole 2, that was on the 800 picked to the ice, with 66 grams slamming it, no spin and no giving up on the engine, never had a belt problem. on the lake or trail that small helix and big wieghts had backshift to make a team clutch blush, but smooooothhhhaaaaaay pull. it was snappy out of the hole but had no end to the shifting.

isnt the r-11 like a 45-34? try that one, leave everything the same, put that helix in the same #3, then run it. your rpms should be up and steady, then drop to hole 2, see if the rpms stay the same. this is where you need a timing setup. have someone with a stop watch or a radar. if you get to hole 1 and your rpms are still good i would drop to a softer spring and try that in hole 3
