Default Gettin ready to race!!!

I'm finally getting the ultra set up for the grass drag inoctober in belvidere,IL. I got the main jets in the ball park. I like what the pluugs look like with 310's. But now I have a horrible bog/hesitation. Once I get past about 4000 she takes off like a bat out of hell. I was wondering if i need to adjust my air screw or change pilot jets. I'm really not sure what to do to get rid of it. This will be my first year drag racing. I still need to tighten the secondary spring. I wold appriciate any advice. What are the other ultra's running for set up's?

Thanks,

Josh

engagement should be closer to 6 grand. either its bogging because its fat or lean on the pilot. chances are if you dropped the mains a lot and did nothing with the needles you might need to raise them a notch or two?

for 500'grass drags with new plugs on pump gas you should not see color until after several runs. if you can find some 95 octane vp gas you could drop several more sizes real easy. i ran 320's in the 800 down to 0 degrees out for 1000' ice runs, for 500' on grass in 50 degree temps using vp fuel you might be able to work your way down. stay safe though, better to loose a race over a 10 dollar trophy than eat a motor.

are you stock or piped?

i would try changing the gearing to a 66 pitch chain with a 40 tooth on the bottom,

if stock i would drop the primary wieghts to 52 grams, find a primary spring close to a 170-300, then run a 52-36 helix or very close to it with a polaris silver blue or a little stiffer spring.dial in your rpms using the wieghts and secondary spring.

if you are using pump gas, then you for sure want your engagement over 5000 rpm for sure, what you do is take the sled up to the line with cool water, run it on the warm up stand hard. get it to clean out the engine. then set it on the starting line and hold the rpms a couple hundred under engagment until the light turns green. it will keep the engine clean of fuel and the pipes trying to build heat.

Well hell. I didn't even know about the one in pec. it is 20 minutes away!!! my sled is piped. I have those decker racing pipes. I don't know anything about them. My sled is clutched for low rpm slp pipes and I am sure that my gearing is stock. I want to just run improved stock for now. I am running 93 octane and I did drop the needle one notch so it is in the 4th position. My clutch engages right around 4000. Thanks for the info. I'm not sure If I'll be able to do everything you said madcow. I have a tight budget. If I could get rid of the bog then I think it would do ok in the race. I'm not trying to win right away, I just want the practice for next year. If I can fix the bog before suday I will be at the pec. race. Thanks

even if you went with a trail stock machine, some time on the track, seeing how things work, getting a couple times with the lights, it all helps.

well I never made it to pec. it rained all day and I got suck setting up my son's bunk bed. It's only him so I don't know wht she thinks he needs one!!! And I didn't drop the needle i dropped the clip. I did notice that when I start the machine and start to rev it, it will bog until i choke it and then it will stop.?!! I wonder if I raised the needle (drop the clip) and made it alittle richer if it wouldn't take the bog away?
