Default 2009 Polaris Shift 550 (OSM Review)

Just some good reading from OSM!

When Polaris introduced the Shift last year, their goal was to introduce a sled with more value, more power and excellent handling. They did just that. So for 2009, Polaris went one step further – expanding the Shift line-up. One of these new Shifts is the 550 IQ Shift. Taking over for the aged Supersport, the 550 Shift features the proven Polaris fan-cooled twin, but with a new exhaust system that increases performance. Now with enhanced throttle response and acceleration, this 60 horsepower engine has NiCaSil-lined cylinders and dual VM34 carburetors. Since it’s housed in the IQ chassis, ride and responsive handling is excellent. The 550 IQ Shift has PERC (Polaris Electronic Reverse Control), an analog speedo, a fuel gauge, and adjustable hand and thumb warmers. Of course, it comes perfectly black, meaning you can customize it to your heart’s content.

You don’t normally see the words “value” and “premium” together; however “premium” is exactly how you’d describe the Shift’s front and rear suspension. This sled rides extremely well, and while it won’t keep up with its liquid-cooled counterparts on the lakes, it will be right there on the tight, twisty trails. The redesigned Freestyle seat and fuel tank enhance the sled’s ergos, adding lots of rider comfort.

550cc fan-cooled twin with new-for-2009 two-into-one exhaust

Good read, but it isnt fixed yet. I honestly dont think a 60 horse sled would be near enough for me....

Double? LOL, I think its best if you say "triple" because thats exactly what it is. Either way, 60hp isnt bad to ride in. In fact, I wouldnt mind having that sled - WL.

I don't know how many HP my Indy 400 has... maybe in the high 40's? I have fun on that sled, so 60 HP would still be fine. Isn't 60 HP what the almighty "sled of the year" Phazer has?

If you're referring to the latest Phazer, it's 80. Do airbox mods, adjust fuel delivery curve and open up exhaust a bit and 88 - 90 is quite possible.

This sled is a fun little sled to ride though, 60 hp or not. It won't stay with the bigger sleds in the steep-n-deep, but on western trails it's right there.

I knew I would raise Vert's hackles if I underestimated the Phazer's power.

No, no hackles raised. I just knew the correct HP rating, it may well be nearer 60 than 80 on a dyno. But I have yet to see a dyno on the mountain......lol.

Early Indy 400s were about 62hp and it was a very fun sled to ride back in its day. I used to have a '88 Indy 400 and also had a '89 Indy 500 (72hp) as well and of course Ive owned alot of sleds over the years. WL
