Default What makes a sled a vintage?

With all the grassdrags going on right now I've been looking at classes. There is no way I'd grassdrag my dragon or my triple, but my 1986 indy400 I would. I noticed that 1985 sleds are considered vintage class. Does that mean that my 1986 will be classified as vintage next year?

I believe that it is 25 years old or more to be considered vintage.

That's what I thought, just confirming it. So I'll be racing in the vintage classes next year lol.

The indy400 is all I have that I'd want to grass drag. Fuckers very quick in short distances. I've been debating swapping the shorty studded track back under the rxl, then I'd grassdrag it. But it wouldn't be very competetative in the improved 700 class.

Take what you can win with. What have you done to the 400?

Absolutely nothing lol, well I take that back it has studs lol. The ole indy is bone stock. I've thought about piping it but decided that I'd rather keep it bulletproof. I still ride it every year and it beats up on my 2 buddies with 580ext kitties like yours.

I have a 550, I cant believe that thing is that quick? I always thought my 550 was pretty quick. It beats the newer poo 500's.

I take it that it is the equivalent of the newer 440s?

Nope, a friend of mine has a TXL-Indy 340 that is very quick and is all stock.
He can almost keep up with my 700 out of the hole, and forget about the tight and twisties, he can keep up real well there.

Not really, it's the difference between a good rider and an average rider.
If he really knew how to handle that sled, he could take me in the tight trails since the Poo is a lot lighter. But, he only comes close at the hole shot because the Poo is so light and engages at a higher rpm.

That is why I think my indy400 is so quick, only weighs 400 pounds wet.

All of the sleds ya'll talking about were great in their day; I had one of the first TXL-Indy 340's made in 1980, I believe they only made 250-300, then went into production in 1981. Also had a '87 400 Indy, and that was the sled in its day, buddy had a '86 Indy 400, and we fabricated the plates to jack up the rear ends on those sleds, guess what, now they call it Xtra10!! Oh yah, I also bought a '87 Indy 600, and had Chopper City rat that damn sled out; lost control at the C-note one day, got home, and wife and baby MX at the time, looked horrible when I came in the door, had blood all myself, sled was in tuff shape (remember the metal skis didn't flex well back in those days). Got it repaired and sold it the next year, too much HP, and needed Race Gas to run. Then to a '93 Indy 500 Classic, really nice until MX and I got hit in Grand Rapids by a Yamaha Phazer coming over the top of a hill on the wrong side. Well, I went back to the triple mill in '96, as Polaris came out with that sweet XCR600 with Xtra10 and CRC, I had reverse, mirrors, lightning bolt track, all the bells and whistles on it!! At the time MX decided he was going to put his name to it!! Problem was though, he was just learning the ropes with momma and the '92 Indy 500 with two up seat, so his baby brother would fall a sleep in front of the old man while riding that sweet ride!! Decided to trade it in for a '99 SKS700 (still in the garage with 10,000 miles later), and the rest is history, now own 4-SKS700's in the Gen 2 design. It is tough to swallow the $10k plus on the new sleds today, seen at Haydays, for maybe 2-3 months ridin' time. I know Cuzzin bit the bullet on a new ride, as well as many of you have in the past, my guess is it will be a while b4 you ever do that again. That is the reason you see sellers commanding higher prices for their used sleds, including Rudi and his '01 RMK, I'm sure Rudi's sled is worth the asking price, but I believe you will see more of us hanging on to our used rides and fixing them up b4 we shell out all the George Washingtons to have a glossy piece of machineery setting in our garages

I'm not a vintage buff so I could be wrong. But I don't even think it's fan cooled, I think it's air cooled.

No that wasn't me lol. Come on Harry, I wouldn't get beat like that by old iron. Mainly because I wouldn't put myself in a situation to get spanked like that lol.
