Default 600 cc?

okay you mountain riders. would a 600 cc twin cut it out in the mountains? 120 hp would be right around what the 99 sks 700 puts out, but i also know that you loose like 30-50% of your HP as you head up into the mountains.

i know a 600 would be all i would need for around here. and the track would be a 144x2" so i could go quite a few places that i couldn't with the sks.

vert, Indy, RMK, and other's who have ridden the mountains also i'm like 175 lbs soaking wet with lead weights attached to my feet

Pipe, Porting, Heads, and carb work. (140 was a rough estimate, given numbers for each part individually, probably around mid 135 ish.

well i could put a 121 track on there, 200 or so studs, twin pipes, and we can really see what that storm can do against a twin, but i like off trail riding, so stretch that storm out and we'll see what it can do in the UP lol

Don't worry Harry, I plan to show you what a new twin will do to your boat anchor this winter.

3% HP loss for every 1000 feet is what I have heard... so 30HP at 10k feet or 84hp for a 120hp sled.

That being said, my M6 wasn't "bad" but I wasn't high marking anyone. You would be OK but it will always be underpowered. This is one reason I want to do the pipe setup on mine M8.

yeah, i know it would be underpowered, but CAN it make it around? i mean, mainly it will be for around here, which it's perfectly suited for. i may go out west 1 maybe 2 times a year, so i just want to know if i would have to have the next size up just to run out there, yeah i wouldn't be hymarking anyone, but so long as i can carve and sidehill that's fine by me.

A 600 won't set any highmark records, but it's quite capable at elevation. As has been mentioned before, a 144 x 2" works great up here.

If I'm not mistaken the formula for hp loss if roughly 3% for each 1000' of rise.

As a side note, most of the rental sleds are 600 mtn. sleds out here, so they are quite capable of getting around ok.

120 hp X .03 = 3.6 hp per 1000 '
120 - (3.6 x 9) = 87.6

Someone jump in and correct me if I'm wrong. BTW above is just an estimate. If it deducts per 1000', results would be different.
120 hp at sea level
120 hp X .03 = 3.6
120 - 3.6 = 116.4 at 1000'
116.4 x .03 = 3.4
116.4 - 3.4 = 113 at 2000'

and so on, actually I believe the last calculation is the correct one. Anyway you get the idea.

You would be fine with it. If you plan to mod it for more power then just go with the bigger engine. I was going to convert my 600 to a 700 (same bottom end) and opted for the 800 after having lots of small problems. What is the price difference?

You'd be fine on it out here with it close to stock. I know a few guys riding 600's and going most places any of the rest of us do.

If you're worried about it you could always buy something like THIS. That'll make the worry's disappear.

Cuzz rather than sink money into your sled here you go Brad Story M7 turbo

Depends on what you like to do out here in the mtns. If you just like playing in the meadows carving around the 600 does just fine. The difference between the 600 and the 800 weight wise is not much at all but price is obviously a factor. I would never go back to a 600 out here would never get a 700 either. Things are just more fun when you can get yourself in places that you really should not be in. Maybe that is why I want a TNytro.

That is a sharp looking sled. I really like the white. Honestly the 600 should be enough for you MX, your not a fatass like myself. You can do plenty to that hing to get some more power out anyway.

it's not the only one i'm looking at, you call 4500 miles high mileage? the sks has almost 10k on it lol.

besides if i did buy it, i would strip it down a completely rebuild the motor and the suspension.

and harry, i know i could get the 600 to produce almost as much HP as the 700's, but then it would get to reliability and having to run race fuel on a daily basis. i dunno yet, i have a few sleds i'm looking into.

Save money and get the 600, you're going to do most of your riding at low elevation anyways. Then ride it once or twice as is out west. But also keep an eye out for a used turbo kit(2-4k) If you really feel the need for more power then get a turbo that you can slap on just for going out west, then you will have roughly the same amount of power in each area and you will keep your reliability when riding at home.
