Talking My 76 Polaris Colt 340

My new to me 76 Colt,has a newer 81 Galaxy 340 in it and is in over all pretty good shape,need's a seat cover and windshield but other than that she's complete with little rust.

Hi Westman,
Yeah,got it from a kid in Pillager yesterday,she's in nice shape but am having starting issues after I got home,dont think Im getting any spark?

Did you check if its getting spark? Take the plugs out of the engine, put them in the plug wires/caps and set them on the engine, pull it over and see if its getting good spark, Im sure you know that and if you dont thats how you can check.

Check that first, if its good. Check all youf fuel lines, cables etc. If its not getting spark first try different plugs, killswitch, wiring etc.

Did you get it for the asking price or did you talk him down on it?

I have tried the plug on head but cant see any spark,Im going to try to get somebody to come over and pull the cord for me lol
I traded him a original PSP for it so it was about even I guess?

Haha that sounds like an ok deal..

You shouldnt need anyone to pull the cord for you, you should be able to see it, and pulling the cord without the plugs in is very easy as its not building compression.

Check the connections, kill switch, cdi box, all wires, Make sure they are connected and look like they are going into the right connectors and all that.

3 things give spark....the plugs, the stator and the coils......process of elimination.

most old sled dont have stators, they have points and condesers

Welcome to the site Russel! Always good to see some vintage guys. We actually have a few (myself included).

My dad bought a 77 Colt S/S 340 that was dipped in a lake when I was little and we rebuilt it together. First time I wrenched on a sled in fact.

Anyways, the original engine had points, and the new engine should have a CDI.

Sadly no,I got the points ect.. in and had spark so I put her back together and I pulled the rope and it just exploded,flames shot out everywhere.
I dont know what happend but it burned to the ground and almost took my garage with it
I got a 80 Arctic Cat Pantera the other day (And a fire extinguisher)!
Maybe I will have better luck this time?

Engine probably was flooded and the pipe was full of gas too.

Love those 80 Panteras.

Thats what im saying, I want to say its not believable. But it kinda is. That thing had to be dripping fuel all over. Id like to see some pics too..

We have a little mini bike with a 5hp briggs and the gasket between the carb and tank leaks, well it just has a real short pipe on it for a muffler. the fucker started on fire haha.. Its burnt up but it still runs

I was working on a 95 XCR 600 a few years back when it erupted into flames. Could have been my fault seeing how I removed the carbs, had fuel leaking everywhere, and than proceeded to heat the foot rest where the trailing arm bolts in with a torch. Needless to say POOOF. Once the fuel burnt off all was good.

Haha did it burn everything up like the seat and all that? All the wires, the seat got messsed up, most any rubber or plastic is melted up a bit.

Sorry to hear.

I always have about 5-20 galons of gas in the garage.
Old sleds and new sitting in there. lots of stuff leaking, spilt.

Usually if I have a pail of water, hose from the sink, and a big ass fire X.

My shop vac caught on fire trying to suck up some gas/varnish in a old gas tank. There where flames shooting out the exhaust of the vac, started a box on fire. LOL

Never can be to safe.

I had a fuel line blow off on a 74 Custom II at 70 mph and burst into flames.
Shut it down quick and yanked the hood off threw snow on it till it was out.
Fortunately only burnt the covers off some wires and melted the brake line. Some shrink sleeves and a new brake line and it was good to go. Oh yeah, clamps on the fuel lines after that too.

O man im putting clamps on my lines!! Some of mine dont have them, none have fallen off yet thankfully.
