Default T-Day Ride - Pre-Ride Scouting

After enjoying a home-cooked T-Day meal (I actually cooked it for myself) and a short nap, I realized I was bored. Since I wasn't completely convinced that snow was lacking in mountains I decided on a little drive. Well it turned into a bit longer than I figured on going, but I found snow without going to Tog or driving to Utah for it.

Below are pics with a short description:

This is Beaver Parking area, usual winter trailhead .... lacking snow

Now here comes a gap for about 20 miles. I was getting discouraged until I got to Hams Fork Campground. By now I had to go to 4wd because of spotty snow/ice on road. Across the valley, where the road climbs to top of range, north-facing slopes had snow .... Had to check it out, I was already here.

Head up the side of mountain, ahead is a set of switchbacks winding up side. By now I realize snow is deeper than expected and it's setup, springtime snow. Too late, too high to try to back out, no room to turn around. Long story made short, I climbed to the top thru ice and crusty, sun-baked snow to find the top is covered. Stopped to snap a few shots, then decided to get off mountain because of failing light and a few scattered flakes that were sporadically falling. I got my rush for this weekend already, trip up was bad, downhill really sucked. But made it down before sunset and will return to campground with Jason tomorrow to get in a Nov. ride.

View from on top, same location last years pics of first ride were from:

We'll unload at the campground and have to ride about 200 yards of snirt to get to opposite side. I'll post up more pics of ride here tomorrow night.

WOW ..... didn't get up on mountain on Friday, but we made it today. 45 miles in to find a place to unload. Put about 40-45 miles total on sleds without a problem once I got PowerJets shut off to lean things out on top. Snowed entire time we were out so actually ran into more fresh on top than was expected. Got loads of pics and video. I'll post some up once I get them sorted out.

Altogether it was a great start to the season....... Game on now.

Where were you? What was the closest town? I would like to look at a map. How did the sled run?

Sorry Andy, I was so hyped last night it was unreal. We were riding in the range we always do, just north of Kemmerer in Bridger-Teton National Forest. Meadow in pictures is part of an area called Green Knoll (42.31N 110.77W (Elev. 8397 ft))

Kemmerer is about 35 miles south, Cokeville is 13ish miles west.

Once I got Jets closed off to get the bog out of upper end it ran great. Better than I expected for 1st time out. I tried to follow everyones advice on breakin, but it finally came down to run it like I will later, just didn't hold any WOT pulls on it. Seat of the pants feel, I got my moneys worth out of it.
Only issue was a smoked belt loading it uphill into truck.

I've got some video to edit and clean up I'll try to get loaded today/tonight. This unfortunately is my drive to Gillette day.

It is if the snow comes. We got POW out of these little impulses while UT got slammed with an ice storm. Not a good way to start there year. We ran across a lot of ice near ground on the roads, but up high in the meadows was the start of a really good base.

Sounds like you need a wind filter on the mike.

POV is kind a sucky, unless you were just looking at the skis the whole time.

Yes it does need a filter of some sort, any suggestions on how to make one?

POV was set further ahead, no I hardly ever look at ski's. Aim of camera was off a bit. I'm going to play with some different mounting locations this coming week with camera on helmet, get a location and angle that works. Somehow mark it on helmet for a reference later.

A big piece of foam is what is usually used.

That's similar to what I was thinking of. I figured a foam piece off of a set of earplugs would at least cancel some of the noise.

I thought of grabbing 1 of those cheap novelty laser pointers and attaching it to get aiming of camera right.

Jason on a 08 XP, Steve on a 07 XP ..... Jason's new ride and his from last season. My son is an AC rider ..... plus he sold his triple BECAUSE IT WAS TOO FUCKING HEAVY.

We all appreciate his consideration for our backs.

As far as the Don't comment, ride one before judging it. I don't care for the way they ride, feels wrong. But they will go in the POW like no tomorrow.

Once I have a job, I am going to go off trail sled shopping...that is after I save some more. I am first going to look at the Wedge RMK (I really want a 680 or Storm triple) then if that fails I am probably going to get something just like what Rubi just sold.

When are you going to get over the triple thing? They are good engines, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with a twin, just one less cylinder??

Well several things. I like the long legs of the triple firs of all, the constant acceleration. What I want to spend on an off trail sled, to get a decently powerful one I need a triple. Plus those ultras have so much potential.

You have never riden a newer twin.

My 02 Polaris 600 pulled hard, it was 120hp. I couldnt imagine how a 700 or 800 would be.

You need to be a little more open minded, and broden your horizens.

Maybe then you will start to see clearly, you stubborn bastard.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I dont want to spend over $2000 on an off trail sled. SKS and RMK's are both more expensive than you Pro X or XC SP's. I would love to have a 2004 700 Edge Switchback. Sexy sled!
