Updated at 1:51 PM...... AN AVALANCHE WARNING has been issued by the Bridger-Teton National Forest.......To begin immediately and last until 7 AM on Tuesday December 30, 2008........For the mountainous areas of Teton, Lincoln and Sublette Counties including Jackson Hole and Star Valley.........
Rapidly warming temperatures today have greatly increased the avalanche hazard. This rapid increase in temperatures is causing large volumes of snow to release from roofs in urban areas. It has also increased the avalanche danger in the backcountry which was already HIGH. This morning avalanche hazard reduction efforts at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort triggered an avalanche in the Headwall Area that damaged a restaurant and caught four ski patrollers. No one was harmed. Dangerous unstable conditions exist in the mountains and in urban areas. Travel in the backcountry is not recommended and extreme caution should used around buildings with large volumes of snow on their roofs...................Morning Advisory..........

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is an avalanche deathtrap right now. The whole mountain is sliding. The Headwall slid and hit the midmountain restaurant, blowing windows out of the building. The leading edge of that slide was 21 feet high. The resort and the Teton County Sheriff's Department have tried to suppress photos of the incident. I can't find any photos yet. Two patrollers were buried today doing control work, and there was one fatality inbounds this week. I will not be going out there until this situation improves. The locals are saying that "the white dragon" has been dormant for quite awhile, but it is out for blood this year.

I found a couple photos. This is in the second story of the restaurant.

How would you like to be sippin your lattes one morning and have that happen? One local said he's going to put his beacon on now and not take it off until May. He's even going to wear it in the shower and on the couch. Judging by that picture, it's not a bad idea.

Indeed the Dragon is awake all over the Rockies. Another young man lost his life yesterday in UT in a run out zone. I read a bit about the Headwall slide earlier today. That was actually a planned, controlled slide wasn't it?

The backcountry isn't a forgiving place to be right now. Be aware of your surroundings and terrain adjacent to where you have chosen to ride. Stay off/away from the steep-n-deep until this recent snow has a chance to either stabilize and bond to previous layers or naturally release. May take a week, this may be a problem all season.

I know it's making me rethink riding habits before I even get up there.

Ride Safe, Ride Smart.
