Default make a porting template

so i took carin craft shopping, she hates to go but she was a trooper while i look for new candles and other fun stuff. while at the craft store i seen a couple sheet magnents, they are like 4" wide by 8" long. $2.99 each, they work good since they are flexible and magnetic.

so you have done research and found out how much you need to port on your cylinder. with these magnents it becomes easy to make a good pattern and do all the cylinders the same.
1. roll the magnent up and put it into the cylinder and unroll it.
2. use a straight edge across the top of the cylinder to flush the magnent with the cylinder.
3. with a fine pen or whatever you have to use scribe the shape of the exhaust port onto the magnent.
4. then simply draw another line the amount you want to cut the exhaust port based on the line you drew.
5. use some marker or machinist die and color a rim around the exhaust port.
6. put the template back into the cylinder, then trace your pattern into the blueing, remove template and cut away!!!

if you need to make one for the intake transfer ports you can do it by measureing down from the top of the cylinder to the top of the ports and bottom of the ports, then mark in your width, with it drawn on the back of the magnent simply cut it out to the new size you want and same as before, blue the cylinder, put in the sheet and scribe out the new shape of the port.

hope this makes sense?

So what decides how much material is removed, or where it's removed from? What would happen if I just went to work porting my own heads and made the ports too large? I want to port the dragon but I'd really rather do it myself. Not something I'm doing this year but I'm curious. I'm also thinking about porting Shanes ATV and curious about the same questions.
Is there like a rule of thumb for removing the material and enlarging the ports? I'd love to read more about porting.

the amounts removed and what ports you are doing all depends on the sled,

i use the rule of thumb is that for trail riding the exhaust port width to be around 70-72% the bore, so if the bore is 1" then the exhuast port would be .7-.72" wide.
some of the time they raise the exhaust port a half to one mm. but thats where research comes in on your specific sled, most sleds gain power from this, but some will loose bottom end response or even loose peak hp.

the diagrams are what you measure from your own cylinders. the magnet sheet is just to be a tool to make sure that all the cylinders are the same.

That actually sounds like a good method to template it.
It just seems to make sence.

It might be good to mention for any one wanting to jump right in,
Go easy with it, over porting can cost a motor.
Do your research and do it right

Well since Nicasil is plated onto cast IRON liners, and magnetism is a FIELD, surely strong enough to pass THROUGH 1/100's of an inch or so.

At least I would assume, since I can move that beard guys iron pellet beard with a magnet on a stick through a piece of cardboard:
