Default 1991 Indy 500 Help

I have a 500 Liquid w/ pipes that Idles fine, runs up to about 3000 RPM and then just blubbers, and spits gas out the intake side of carbs. Any thoughts? Carbs cleaned, new plugs. Just picked up this sled so do not know the history.

Thanks

i'd check and make sure that everything is set right in the carbs. like float height, needles, make sure the mains are the right size for the pipe, make sure the reeds arn't chipped or have peddles missing. check compression.

basically give her a once over and a quick diagnostic and report back. normally is just something simple... normally

Dude, pretty sure there arent reeds on a 91 500 fuji engine haha..

But ya other than that, just check the right jetting is in it, cleaned good, etc.

AND, you might not wana keep the pipes on it. The aftermarket pipes on the 500 fuji engines do nothing but lose HP. Riley can tell you about that.. And yes, its tested, they LOSE power over stock pipe.

Check your compression, and check your piston skirts.

Default 1991 Indy 500 Help Update

Ok gone through Carbs twice. Jets are 270 book says I need 280 stock. Pulled exhaust, not plugged up. Checked timing. set where it is supposed to be. Basically I'm down to the CDI unit. It is an aftermarket with no numbers or labels. At Idle it is running @ 68 degrees and it is supposed to be 31 degrees @ 3000rpm. I think that means the CDI is wrong or broke. Is my process correct? Again thanks for the help odd problem to me.

99% of the time CDI's work or don't- they RARELY "kind of work".

Would be nice if you could try out a stock pipe on it to test it that way, normally when you add pipes to a sled you need to rejet higher, right? but with it spitting fuel im not sure its running lean. Did you check the color of the plugs?

True, but the jetting for pipes generally are bigger than two sizes from stock, right?

like sissy said, check piston skirts on intake and exhaust side, do a compression check, check crank seals for leaking.

Compression is low @ about 100psi per side but within a psi of each other. No leaks on gaskets or seals. My thought is that it is the WRONG cdi. Sled came with the original motor which had a fire and blown Mag bearing. The stator wires are burned on that motor. Since the replacement motor has an aftermarket no name CDI unit I'm thinking maybe wrong unit. The guy sold it to the guy I bought it from because he couldn't get it to run. The engine in it is the same generation engine and has the same Magneto assembly as the original so that is correct. Skirts look fine. It Idles beautifully. Starts 1st 2nd pull every time. Just will not rev up. Thanks for all your help so far.

There's you problem, those Poo's don't like aftermarket CDI units.
Also, 100 psi is way low for good running, should be 120 or better.
