Default Need help on gauge project

I'm trying to convert from my old gauge pod which is 3.5" gauges to a newer 5" style gauge pod. Now what I've gathered so far is that my 650 has a 3 pulse tach and there is no 3 pulse tach that is 5". I'm not ready to admit defeat and return to 3.5" gauges. There HAS to be another way around this.
I'm sure someone on this forum can point me in the right direction?? I've never installed a tachometer in a car either but I'm sure that would be an option wouldn't it? Well I just looked at summitracing and it doesn't appear that they have a tachometer that would fit my application. Is my only option a digital tach? Maybe a digitron?
Please any help is greatly appreciated. I don't like the idea of being stuck with 3.5" gauges and nothing I can do about it.

^^ More info please. Are you talking about tachs for pwc? Do they go by pulses like snowmobiles? Do they have 5" gauges? Yeah I need a little more info than 'marine tach', I have no experience with such things lol. I have a fishing boat but there is no tach.

Got all excited thinking yeah this might work. Go to ebay to search pwc tachs, they only go to 8000rpm. I want my sled to hold 8200rpm. Back to the drawing board.

I posted that from my phone, it was just an idea.

If you want to go digital and cheap - and will run on anything - go here:

http://www.tinytach.com/tinytach/index.php

Indestructible, self-powered, waterproof tachs. $35.

The 5" guages are single-pulse?

The 5" tachs come in 2 and 6 pulse. I have 2 6 pulse tachs if someone needs them lol.

Edit: I just looked at that link Bryan, too small. I'd be able to see my 3.5" tach better than the tiny tach. I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I'm waiting to see what other options anyone comes up with.

Do the 5" 2-pulse guages have 1 or 2 signal inputs?

Both 2 pulse and 6 pulse has 2 wires going to the tach. All it is is the power wire from the wire loom that connects to the tachometer.

Is the guage grounded? Every tach I've dealt with had at least 3 wires - +, ground, and signal. (or 2-3 signal wires).

Sounds like your only option IS:

Build a signal converter logic circuit that will cut 1 of the pulses off.

Alittle off topic but, you only run your piped RXL to 8200?

Oops lol 9200rpm.

Here is a wiring diagram from a 90-91 rxl (650), same 3 pulse system.

I know quite a bit about most things. Electric isn't one of them lol either dc or ac. You lost me lol. What you said I'm assuming would be way over my head.

It fires all 3 coils at the same time (some triples don't do this).

So it's either a circuit to cut a pulse off, OR is there another MFR that possible made a 5" 3-pulse guage? Cat? Doo?

I'll look around and see if maybe there's some marine tachs that go above the 8000... there are plenty of triple outboards out there so this would work perfectly.

Well I did some looking around the net this weekend. 6 cylinder engines run on a 3 pulse system. I'm watching a couple automobile tachs on ebay and will be hooking one up by this coming weekend. Hopefully I don't have to modify too much to get it to work.
