Default Need tips on how to plug EGT sensor hole.

My Aaen pipe has an EGT hole in it. I'm not running an EGT. Somebody told me to thread a bolt in there. That didn't work. I twisted it in, and it got all loose when it was turned in all the way. What's the best way to do this? I've got a nice shiny pipe, and I don't want something that looks shitty or leaks.

You don't have access to a welder?

I've got cracks in my tunnel by my snowflap, so should I just bring it to a welding shop and have them do both things? Can they make the pipe look nice? I don't want a big pile of slag on there with burn marks all around it.

Isn't the bung NPT? Bolt wouldn't work. Of course a bolt with JB weld would probably seal it. Or try a pipe plug of the correct size.

It's just a hole in the pipe. 1/4 inch drillbit is tight in there. Could a weld be made nice?

Yeah, use a MIG and be careful with the heat input.

It must have used a clamp-on type probe mount.

I'll bring it to the welding shop. Should they put a little piece of metal over the hole and then weld that around the perimeter?

Take it to a welder Rubi. A tiny patch welded over the hole and it'll look clean. Tons better than having a hex head protruding from your pipe.

That or if it's small enough they can probably spot weld it.

Not to mention part of that bolt will be inside. Patch would work/look fine as long as it was done right.

Guy, I hate to break this to you, but I quit welding some years back. I do welding inspection.

ie someone else makes welds, I critique.

Eyes won't take being under a hood anymore for too long. Too bad too, I used to love to weld. Now I do it occasionally just to make sure I still can or when a welder needs to be shown how to do something. Usually end up being semi-blind for a day or so after. Hell bright sunlight even works on them, so I limit when and how I expose eyes to glare or weld flash.

Can you weld aluminum? Gerbil has a cracked rail, and I want to have the cracks in my tunnel above the snowflap welded. We also want to test ride the sleds today. Last night I blew the bolt I had in the hole right out! If I wanted to test ride, I could take a hose clamp and cover it with something. If we're stopping to get Harry's riser, I'd consider having you weld it. Especially if you can do the other stuff.

I was going to offer to weld it for you in Rockland. I can bring my portable welder but I can't do aluminum with it. It's an option if you can't get someone to weld it before you leave anyways.

Now if you had a IQr none of that would have happened, cause it would have been built to handle your ultra-Aggressive riding style....

If I had an IQr it definitely wouldn't have happened. If I bought all kinds of expensive shit, I'd be working during the winter so I'd never get to ride.

Well, I ended up with a golfball sized pile of lumpy, burnt, stick welder slag to patch my 1/4" in diameter hole in my pipe. Oh well, it is what it is.

OUCH ....... I'm curious why hole is in single pipe rather than in y-pipe with 2.

Well as long as it's closed and you're ok with it.

some EGT's require it to be 8" or so away from the exhaust to get a proper reading... tho it would make more sense so you could see how each cylinder is running...

Don't know. It was a test pipe that the manufacturer used. The welding shop didn't seem to want to switch their nice welder back over to steel since they had just done our aluminum. I thought that he'd be able to do a nicer job even with a stick welder. I kind of made a negative comment about his shitty weld, and he said he had to burn the ceramic coating off of a large area to get it to stick. WTF? Ever heard of an angle grinder buddy?
