Cool Fast idle problem

I have a 2004 polaris swichback, when I come to a stop the engine stays in fast idle mode way too long, around 3000rpm,the dealer told me it should drop down to idle in 5-10 sec. idle is set at 1500rpm, I can get rpm to drop back quicker if I give a quick snap on the throttle. I have adjusted the carbs, ckecked throttle free play, cleaned carbs, nothing helped. Engine works good at all speeds,I just don't like this fast idle problem. Could it be a weak reed valve?

Could be an air leak.
Either carb flanges or crank seals usually.

It could be an air leak but the flanges look good and if you tap the throttle quickly the Rpm will drop back. It's the same cold or warmed up might be worse warmed up, the high RPM mode only happends after you had the sled moving, clutch engauged for a few mimutes, 3500 rpm or more. It's almost like the throttle is sticking a bit but I checked and it is against the stop and rpm still high,it will drop back to idle if you leave it long enought. It like the carb slider or piston is held up a bit, dealer said I needed to adj carb
It didn't help.

have you tested for air leaks?

on the side of each carb there is a small screw, turn each one out 1/2 turn and see if that helps. other wise your dealer might be able to help pick out a different air jet?

umm could be the air jet screw on the carb allowing more gas then needed or maybe the main jets need to drop down a size

the idle speed is contrled by the single big thumb screw, but the mixture is controled by the idle mixture screw and air jet.

If it is a bit lean, it can hold the idle longer than is should.

^^yep, that is why you might want to try turning the screw some.

I haven't tested for air leaks but I will today. The carb has a small adj on the air box side
it out 1/2 turn, hard to adj. on the engine side is other adjustment fuel mixture it out 1.3/4 turn tryed adjusting and it did make much diff with the idle problem. The plugs are a good colour and the machine doesn't seem to be lean,I haven't changed any thing so I don't like to rejet untill I find what might be causing the problem. Can I adj the carb's with the air box off? also the engine is taking more oil that is needed I wonder if the oil adjustment being off could cause this problem.

One of them will have a spring on it, that is the idle speed screw.

on the rack carbs the idle screw is ontop by the cable. the little screw is the mixture screw, out mean more fuel and should lower the idle.

My Carb's have 3 adjustments a big thumb screw on the rack for idle speed adj, one on the side of the carb next to the engine a white thumb screw adj with a slot for screw driver,it has a spring also I think it's the fuel mixture. The other is a small screw next to the air box side,I think it's the air screw,in to richen? I set it at 1/2 turn. I check for air leaks, don't have any.I adjusted the mixture srew out some it may have help a little but it doesn't idle as good, best way for me to get off fast idle is to tap the throttle quickly in and out, Idle drops down good.I also found that the oil pump arm is sticking a pit,the quick throttle movement helps it.I think the pump is sticking in side or has a weak spring?Any one had this problem?

spray some lube at the pump spring, they can get gunky inside.

not sure which screw is the mixture screw, if you turned the one and the idle got more smokey but didnt fall down then turn that one back. the high idle i dont worry about, when you pull up to a stop sign and its idleing high, i flip the choke quick and it settles right down.

I lubed the pump spring it helped some. Thanks for the idea of fliping the choke,it's better than having the fast idle and I don't like the machine running to rich.I still would like to know what has changed in my machine to cause the fast Idle problem, some times it takes for ever to drop down to idle.

not sure? mine does it as well when the engine is on the cold side, so instead of spending money and time worring about idle i just flip the choke, when its idleing i would rather have it idle at the higher rpm any how, keeps the engine and pipe cleaner of fuel.
