Default Porting, DIY or professional?

So last night I finally ripped into Shanes engine.

KFX90 4stroke with rev box, full exhaust system, k&n without airbox, clutched, regeared, and jetted.

I pulled the cylinder to send out it and get it big bored to a 120cc, also getting a cam that's made for the bb kit and a higher compression piston.

Now while I've got it apart and the head is off I'd like to port it also. When I got my quad ported I was very impressed with the performance afterwards. But I don't want to spend $200 to port it either. Seems like all he did when porting mine was make the insides of the ports shiny, not ruff like cast as they were. Is that basically all that needs to be done? I can get a bit for my die grinder to do that, should I? I'm pretty unsure if I should do it myself or send it to someone that's done it before.

After talking to my mechanic when he got here, I do have the die grinder bits. He hasn't done it before but has a kit for doing it. The hardest part is I've never taken valves off a head before. Isn't a special tool required to remove the valve springs?

Just need a spring compressor, looks kinda like a vice grips with forks on them instead of jaws.

on a 4 stroke, the big thing is to take some cardboard or gasket paper, cut it out to the size and shape of the intake manifold, then draw that on the head, then shape the head opening to that new size and shape, then go in as far as you can cleaning up the aluminum.

for the valve area you can then see where the air comes to the valve, just look at how the air flows, smooth or enlarge anything you can some, a little can go a long ways, valve seats get a 7 angle grind instead of a 3 angle for better flow. then do it out the exhaust vavle and port to the manifold just like the intake side, if there is any casting bridges or supports in the head that the air hits, them get a knife edge on them.

I think I'm going to port the intake too. It's ruff on the inside and I want it bigger as well as smooth. Still looking into carbs, I'd like to find a bigger carb to slap in as well.

There aren't any bridges in there. Small engine with 1 cam.

mod the intake first, then do the head.

when they grind the valve seat the standard method is that they have 3 stones that are different angles, as the air comes into behind the valve the air has to flow around the seat, so the stock method is to make a corner using 3 angles, take a pencil and draw a 90 degree corner with 3 angles, then draw the same thing with 7 or more angles, see how it looks more rounded,

the hole theory of porting is to picture the air coming into an engine, look and any bend the air has to make, can you make it flow better around this bend without creating a new bend.

be the air, feel the air, picture the air,

That's kinda what I thought. The porting job is simply to help get the air from point A to point B with the least amount of resistance possible. I'm gonna make this 90, I mean 120cc atv kick serious ass!!

Thank you master madcow!
