Default 09/10 Kal Haven report

I know a few guys here once and awhile will venture on the trail so I thought a thread for it might be good.

Wasn't sure if it was gonna be enough snow but after hearing sleds all night my dad and I figured we'd head from Gobles to South Haven in the morning. We headed out somewhere around 8:30 this morning.

Trails don't have much of a base. There was some snow left over after the rain came through early in the week. Most of what came down the last few days is packed down since the snow was light and fluffy. So the trails are pretty thin. Not idea conditions but they weren't down to the dirt. One or 2 spots were looking a little brown. Pretty much just looked like they do after they get beat all weekend. Big plus is they were relatively smooth.

I know they are alot thinner now but if anyone decides to head out the South Haven way you might not want to go past marker M4. Thats were it got the thinnest. Best riding was between Bloomingdale and that marker. We did see 2 other sleds and have heard some more during the day.

Only downside to the trip was the freezing rain on the ride back.

And because Harry asked here are a couple pictures from the side of the trail.

Any time Harry. It definetly needs more snow. It's thin and my dad drove by later when he went to the store and said it was getting really brown.

I hate to be a scrooge but it's not open. The trail is suppose to have 6" to be open, the guys that ride it when there isn't enough are idiots. The exact idiots that get the north-south trail moved every year.

Yes we are suppose to, what does that have to do with current snow conditions?

Well I'm glad you said something because everyone I talked to always told me that if there we atleast 4 inches I was good. I always thought that seemed like not alot but that's what I've been told for the last 3 years.

From now on I'll be sure not to be out there if there isn't atleast 6 inches.

But once again Mud thanks for setting me straight because I'd believe you over the people I've talked to in the past.

I'll ride around the yard in 3 inches of snow lol, with my indy400 that is. But yeah the trails aren't open unless there is 6" of snow. Not that it stops many people. The north-south trail gets moved every year because of people riding without snow, and abusing private property. Holy shit, I can't believe I'm preaching lol.

There should be plenty of snow to ride by time you get back to Michigan Dirty_Harry, you just make sure your rested and feeling well.

Trails are open when there are 4 inches of snow ON THE TRAILS. At least that is what my map/booklet says.

Depends on the county and trail system. The trails around here state minimum of 4", but don't open til 6" down... So that mean no less than 4" after melt and running. So if there is only 4" to start you will be below that 1st run by. Always best to wait for more snow on a trail since it gets beat down and tore up easy with low snow conditions.

Well I hang my chin low and ask you, would you trust me again lol? I'm going to check my trailmap tonight and see what it says after what Harry posted. I've always thought 6", I don't go near the trail unless there is that much.

My rule of thumb, which is what I'm trying to teach Shane. We don't ride until there is no grass sticking up through snow.

Of course I'd still trust you, I thought you had newer info. I thought the signs on the trail all said 4 inches and so did the map I have. That's why I trustered those people. However, I figured the 6 inches was something new. The one thing I can say is when we were out we didn't dig down to the ground anywhere. I did look back many mnay times to check.

I went out last night from Lawton west to Keeler and there was nice snow the whole way. Lots of sweeping winds causing some nice small drifts to burst through. Lots of riders at the Keeler Keg. Big blast coming in a couple of days. Roads were extremely fast. A great time. Did some snowcross by accident with some serious air on one unexpected rise and had no busted bones and no busted sled and I didn't get run over either. So that was a bonus.

AND I avoid routes that involve the Kal-Haven Trail because the few times I have been on it the cops have been on it like a pearl necklace on Jenna Jameson. I think it is a speed trap.

Funny to see the Keeler Keg N Kitchen posted. Been to the fire dept's pig roast every year for at least 5 years now. We have a cottage on Magician lake just south of Keeler. Frickin town has a restaurant, a fire department, a cemetary, and USED to have a car repair place. I think that's it.

They don't have a fucking gas station there. and since it's in the middle of no where that can be probablematic if you don't plan right.

I have yet to see DNR on the trail. What is the speed limit?

I've been on it 3 times and seen them everytime. I don't recall what the speed limit is.

Eveything I've alway seen has said something like speeds suitable to conditions. Something like that. I know there are a few stretches that have posted limits. I thought somewhere I read there is a speed limit in residential areas.
