Edge skid, $300-$400 depending on what shocks it comes with and if you buy new rear mounting plates or reuse the old ones.

Check Ebay, Craigslist, Al's snowmobile parts.

What makes the Edge a better suspension? Is this opinion or is there an actual physical element of design that makes them better? Just curious.

I've ridden std. suspension, xtra-12, xtra-10, edge, and IQ. The Edge and IQ skids are almost identical, only difference is the width really. The geometry of the Edge is completely different than any previous model skid too. The Edge rides better by far; and although most people say otherwise, I think the xtra-12 rides well too. Just needs to be setup right - but it's not a jumping skid or one that takes a beating well.
You can get and Edge for cheap enough nowadays.

I'm going to have to disagree, I think an M-10 would ride a little nicer than a standard Edge skid...

A true M-10; not the Polaris M10 yes. But if he doesn't get one with the mounts for a Poo, he's fucked. He's trying to make this as easy as possible.

I'd bet an M's skid rides better than an edge, and it could be put under the RXL; just trying to make it easy on him.

can the edge be a direct replacemeant for the X-12 or do you have to relocate the mounts? Do you have to change the front suspention?

Not sure. Rear mounts will have to be changed for sure.
