Default 1998 RMK 700 Build/Project

Yep, who the hell would have guessed ME having ANOTHER project?? HA.. Anyways, here is the new plan, this shouldnt take any longer than it takes for me to gather a couple more parts needed.

I havent stripped the sled down that i just built yet, but it will be real soon. You all know the chassis was trashed before i put it together. Well i just picked up a 98 rmk 700 chassis, its a complete tunnel, bulkhead, belly pan. It also came with the complete front suspension, steering, and shocks which i needed most of so i thought it was a good deal.

Here is the chassis. Too bad it didnt come wtih the tunnel extension and drop brackets, o well tho.

I was planning to just replace the tunnel and keep it a 121, but i happened to come across a good deal on a 136 xtra 10, so i went ahead and snagged it up. Thus, i am going to be putting an rmk back together.

I havent really gotten anything started on it. Parts i need at this moment are a track, and tunnel extension. Im trying to sell my xtra 10 121 and 121 studded track right now, if those sell ill prolly get a track alot sooner. My plan is atleast a 1.5" or larger lugs, 1.5 should be fine since we dont get tons of snow around here anyway. Kinda sucks, i want to have a track already so that i can get the chassis part of the sled finished and ready before i put the motor into it, will be alot easier to move it around and get shit done.

But ya, anyways here is my new project. Should be a real decent sled once im done with it. Cant wait to get it finished, gona be alot nicer than what i had just put together.

Got some progress done tonigiht. The old chassis is pretty much stripped down of everything i am going to use off of it. I got the drop brackets installed on the new chassis. I threw my bar set on it, used the jackshaft from my chassis since it seemed to fit tighter on the brake disc for some reason, slightly less wobbly.

The thing that bolts to the bulkhead for the steering, goes from the steering shaft arm to this thing and then to a steering bar thing in the middle.. Anyways its hard to explain.. But ya it seems kinda wore out and wobbly, it makes so the bars turn before the skis do. The one on the 98 xc chassis is TIGHT, so im going to switch them out and then my steering system should be nice and tight, instead of all loose wore out to shit.

As soon as i get that steering thing replaced, ill be dropping my motor in it and putting about everything on it except for the chain and gears and drive shaft obviously cuz i dont have a track yet. Still have to throw a set of skis on it too. So far so good minus the motor mount issue which im pretty sure ill have that figured out, shouldnt be too hard. Try to get some more pics up tomorrow.

Ok i got a question.. Should i pick up a 136x15x2.25 track for this? Yes, 2.25. I think thats a bit over kill for riding here in minnesota, and when ill most likely ride trails sometimes too. The track is fully clipped and also ported. I really think its pretty over kill but its really cheap, cheaper than i could get a 1.5 or so track for anywhere im sure. Its in nice shape, i dont want to get it and destroy it using it around here tho.

Will a 2.25 even fit in that tunnel without having to trim the lugs?

Im not sure. It MIGHT fit, but it might be slightly too big. I know this thing came with 2" lugs so its close. I could trim it down a little i guess? How much work would that be? Seems like it would be alot.

Only get that track if it is really cheap, Westman. Most of the time you will just be folding those lugs over and losing traction. I'm not sure, but back in the day when a 98 RMK was the shizzle, I think they had to do modifications to fit more than a 2".

Ya i dono, its hard to decide if i should get it.. Would you call 100 plus shipping cheap? He said there are no missing paddles on it, in good shape. I wish i could find a nice 1.5, 1.75, or even 2" for a good price like that. Im still looking.

There are lots of 1.75 to 2" tracks out there 1.25 and 1.5 are the more expensive used tracks because they fit most everything. 2.25 lugs without deeper snow unless fully studded will just beat that track to hell and ruin it quickly. Even with studs it is hard on the track. Stick with 1.25 to 1.75 for snow in the lower Midwest.

I would love to get a 1.5 or 1.75. I know that 2.25 is over kill for here, and like i thought, it sounds like it would just get ruined right away. Hopefully i can find a nice 1.75 track for cheap. If anyone comes across one for a good price let me know, im hoping to get it asap so i can get my sled together.

Mostly just the skid. The track off my old suspension should fit correct? I guess I do not know but I was told it was a 121x15x1. Its off a 90 indy 500.

Your wanting to upgrade the suspension in the 1990 500? Yes your old track will fit if its a 121x15 which it should be on that sled.

I mean no it wont fit, buy my track too!! Haha jus kidding, of course your track will work.

Also being fully ported you run across a corn field and the stalks will likely grab on the port holes and get bound up in the track and potentially rip track or jam in the drivers.

Westman, when the fuck are any of us going to meet you? Seriously, I remember back in the day when you first got into this.

It's been like 2 years and no one has met you, you haven't ridden with anyone, and you haven't made it to HayDays. WTF dude?

Hopefully ill meet some of you soon. Until just recently i got my license, never have any money or a way to go anywhere to go riding or anything. Im sure ill be at haydays next year whether i drive myself alone or not, since i have my own car and license now.

I doubt ill meet anyone for riding this year, i need to get myself a truck so i can haul my sled places. If i get a way to haul my sled im sure by next year ill be taking a trip to ride with some of the nutz.

I did meet blue avenger for a bit, he came and picked up a pipe. Other than that i dont think ive met anyone else off slednutz.

If im real lucky ill get my sled ready to ride, and maybe make a trip this year?? I doubt it tho, still dont ahve a truck. Maybe i can get all the tools and shit out of my dads truck and take it if i happened to have some money to go riding somewhere. Or i can prolly take a buddy and split gas cost and shit.. I dono, i still doubt it will happen this year yet but you never know.

I second that. I was hoping to get some riding in. Now I am gonna have to do clean up on the sled. Was outside during all of this.

Ya the rain really screwed the snow up now im sure..

Im considering taking it to a 144 if i can get these extensions cheap enough. I shouldnt have much more trouble finding a 144 track than a 136 i dont think. Ill only get them if i can get them cheap enough tho. Otherwise im perfectly fine with a 136. Hopefully i can just find a damn track and be done with it. So ya saba buy my skid so i can get a track! Haha
