Default 98 Ultra SPX problems?

I'm looking at one tonight. Are there any issues that I should be aware to check on it? Anything common to go wrong?

It's an XCR 700 with a queer paint job. Heavy as fuck.

I realize it's a tank lol. There isn't a way to check the waterpump visually is there?

If there's goo in the coolant tank that resembles to color of the oil, that's a clear indicator. There *is* a weep hole on the bottom of the water pump too.

the 99 xcr is a true 700 cc and has ves.
the spx is the ultra based 680 with no ves and round slide carbs. 135 hp in a heavy chassis. they were good groomed trail rockets. clutching and gearing can help them along ways over stock.
tempa flow should help with jetting and day to day driver.

would make a good project sled some day. got the ultra bottom end, get a price top end kit and you got a good hp sled to pay with!!

I am strickly looking for a trail sled. Nothing that would ever be off a groomed trail or icy gravel road. As I already stated, I do realize that it's a tank. It's low to the ground and will stick to the trail. The sled does have HTG pipes on it, that should put it pretty close to 150hp shouldn't it?

Edit: this is the sled in question......

He replaced the "worn out" skid with the same skid from an xlt. Extra10 skid.

for groomed trail riding i think it would be a good sled. good gauges, hot handwarmers, good wind protection, nice lights. corners flat and fast.

Dirty_Harry is drooling over this and thinks I should go look at it lol....
http://grandrapids.craigslist.org/rvs/2113339328.html

I've been trying to find an xcr800 but not having alot of luck less than $2000. Well that and I don't really want to drive too far to looky either lol. The guy with the ultra spx is calling me tonight if he can get out early enough to view it, otherwise I'll have to see it this weekend. Should anyone happen to know where an XCR800 is within a hundred miles or so drive of me I'd be interested in checking it out. I'm basically looking for a trail sled like mentioned before, just for groomed trails and icy gravel roads. I've been looking for about a month and a half with no luck.

great looking sled! i would be curious if its a big bore or a stroker. not a big fan of stroker cranks on the trail.I really have no reason for this because if done right the crank shouldnt matter. but the only stroker cranks i know that are out running have been a pain in the butt for the owner.

if the spx is close to the 2 g mark i would look for a stock xcr. give riley a shout and see if his friend is willing to sell his.

the stock xcr will be a big cry over the spx as far as trail manners and what not. better mpg, more hp, faster throttle response. better low speed driving, 10 lbs lighter.

Its a BB kit, but way far from a trail sled lol. Even with the suspension converted back to trail, I can't see it being a pull and go sled.

The SPX I plan to offer 1300, I can't find an xcr800 for that price. I'm also asking Riley about his friends sled.

a couple years ago around here you could have offered 800$ for a clean spx and taken it home. 3 years later they are more exspensive? battlestorm likes to flip sleds once in a while. couple years ago you could get 01 edges for just over 2 grand once in a while, flip it for 2500-3 grand. now they are firm priced at 2500-3000.

I agree. Over the summer I passed on 2 1999 xcr800s for 1000 & 1200, I'm regretting it now.

its an ultra with a gen 2 belly pan and hoods, xcr 800 top end and slp pipes, used firecat skid and fusion seat. looks sharp but is hardly worth 11000. hell we all should buy used parts chrome them and sell them for an extreme mark up.

it does look good though.
