Default DCUBA sessions Island Park

Gerbil, Baller, and I have been out in Island Park for a few days. Finally we've all got sleds. Gerbil bought an Assault, but he didn't do very much due diligence, and there have been some problems. (Anybody got a nice used 146" track for sale?) Baller managed to smash some stuff on his sled and crush his leg doing a sick drop onto the #3 tee box on the Island Park Village Golf Course. He claims he was practicing some technical tree riding, and then jumped a small drift, but actually he wasn't paying attention and dropped off a 10 foot ledge and lawndarted into a massive drift, leaving a bomb hole the size of a city bus. It's been too dang cold to take any pictures. The camera would freeze up. That will change in a few days because it's going to warm up and start dumping copious amounts of snow. We've probably only got 30 or 40 miles on so far, but between Gerbil's breakdowns and lack of ambition because of the weather, I'm not really too concerned about the slow start. Things will start going off soon!

We'll be riding until 21st or 22nd. Here's some pictures from the trip so far. These pictures are from Sawtelle Loop Trail right across from the resort we're staying at. Snow was nice and light because it's been cold. Not a lot of new snow, but the top foot of snow was loose and fresh. It was soft enough underneath to get stuck (as Baller found out a few times.)

Here's a couple scenery pictures. The first is Sawtelle Peak (we haven't climbed to the top yet.) The second is the view of the Tetons from Sawtelle.

The trails to get from here to there are in awesome condition. There isn't very much sled traffic right now. It's actually pretty fun diamond pounding through the switchbacks.

It is dumping HARD right now. Won't be too long before it's really deep and light. We'll probably stay pretty close to home base today because of poor visibility.

Yesterday we hit Black Canyon Loop. We found some balls-deep snow up there in the higher terrain. Lots of tight trees, but we found some sweet play areas. We probably could have found more if it wasn't snowing and flat light conditions.

Here's a couple Burandt/Rasmussen impressions: (Sorry, that's the best we could come up with)

How well does the Edge RMK compare to the IQs?

Whos on the Edge? did he have a tree obsession?

Whos riding the red IQ?

I couldnt imagine riding in the deep shit....I can get stuck in less than a foot.I allways wonder how you guys can stop in the deep snow and get started again.....any time I let off the throttle I seem to sink and get stuck!

They all have new braapers, but nothing has changed.

Baller still can't help but get up close and personal with some wood, and Gerbil still lets his sled take a few laps without him, while said furry spends some quality time with his ass on display, treating himself to a facial from the gods that sent all this pristine mountain powder.

Nice puns Madcow, but Baller just started riding sled about this time last year. Gerbil and I are starting on our sixth season this year. You'll get your money, Madcow, when I get home. If you NEED it sooner, just whine about it a little more.

For questions concerning the Edge and the IQ, the Edge is still a very capable deep snow chassis. Last year Baller and I were climbing in a spot known as Baller's nemesis. It's not a huge climb, but it's quite technical due to drastic slope changes and trees growing in strategically bad spots for a snowmobile rider. I effortlessly walked up and down the climb a few times with my 144 600 IQ. Baller experienced multiple stucks with my Edge and then we switched. I rocked up and down it a couple times with the Edge short track, while he managed to stick the IQ RMK a few times. I don't remember how we got Baller out of there. I think he was stuck near the top with the IQ RMK, and I pulled him with the Edge shorty and a long length of rope. I predict this year Baller will easily climb his nemesis on the first try with his Edge 151.

The IQ rides higher in deep snow which makes it climb better. The IQ works better than the Edge when aggressively carving. The IQ holds a low carve in an amazingly stable and predictable way. That's the IQ's greatest advantage in my opinion. The Edge is somewhat better at subtle carves and turns that aren't really sharp. The IQ wants to be slammed down in the snow all the way on its side before it really responds the best. The Edge is content to make small course adjustments when just rolling it up on edge a little bit.

Here's some pictures from yesterday. We rode the BPA Powerlines, and once we climbed up out of the valley, the snow was awesome. Not breaking over the bumper all the time, but sometimes it was. We got dumped on last night so it should be really good today.

We'll start out with a Baller picture set first. So far Baller has been mainly featured in stuck photos, so we'll try to make him look better this time. He looks like an alpine hero in these, but it might have something to do with the photographer.

Is Gerbil worried that his new sled has a leprechaun hungry for wiener on the seat? He's always riding on one side or the other rather than straddling. If there is a wiener hungry leprechaun, he was a total idiot for buying that sled - even if it was cheap!

There is no wiener hungry leprechaun that I know of but there are a few other gremlins that need a little attention. It is my own fault for taking the guy I bought it from for his word instead of taking a closer look at a few things.

I do like how it handles though and each time we go out I am more impressed with what the IQ chassis can do.

My carving abilities blow as well... on my sled at least. Olaf had trouble getting mine to carve, and when I took his for a spin it was like riding a waverunner.

Yesterday we had stuckfest 2011. It was pretty fun. We were just pointing it up stuff we couldn't make and hoping for the best. Gerbil needed the saw, and Baller had some tree issues too.

Today we rode down in the flats and carved up tons of untracked powder. After experiencing some poor visibility yesterday, we decided to keep it lowkey and hit the little meadows down here close to home. There's plenty of snow in the forecast, so it should get even better as the week goes on.

Here's a video for Zeezlebub and other video fans. Internet is too slow here to really upload much video.

i can float it with no issues its when i try to do a hard sharp carve it just wants so either not stand up or just roll, i have a hard time finding the happy medium were i can just ride through it lol and right is way easier then left for me..

One of the guys I've ridden with had an Edge RMK 151. He said the same thing, that's why I skipped over the edge chassis when I went to upgrade from my GenII. The GenII is a far superior carving chassis compared to the edge.

When Baller got on my Edge last year, it was after a whole season on his Gen II. On his first attempted carve, he was violently thrown from the Edge because he said that it needed that much less effort to carve. Baller is no expert yet, but he seems to be rippin it pretty good... there's even photo evidence to support that. I'm going to try Baller's Edge today to see how horrible it actually is?

hmmm, sway bar in or out?

On my GenII all I had to do was look to one side and it would roll right over. Ok, that might be a bit of an exaggeration but there really wasn't much effort.
