Default OK, what's going on with this 580 Powder Special?

So me and Gerbil are tuning up Cornfedd's new '96 Powder Special. I've got some questions.

What is the deal with this electronic connection on the carbs. It seems like some kind of stoneage TPS or something. Can you remove the wires from the carb bodies so that you can really soak and clean them, or do those things need to stay calibrated like TPS on a set of racks?

Carb venting? It looks like there are two threaded inserts that go into the airbox. Are there supposed to be fittings that screw in there to vent the carbs to the airbox? Right now the carb vents just have about 5" of tubing that goes nowhere. That doesn't seem too effective to me.

What kind of horsepower does the 580 put out? Gerbil seems to think it's pushing 90 HP because it has more displacement than a Liberty 500. I'm thinking closer to 70 because it's not even a case reed induction motor. What does it actually have?

Apparently the power was around 95.

The XLT's werent case reed and they were 90-100 hp.

Them 580s were good reliable motors with surprising power. I have a couple friends who still have some, one has carb and one has efi.... the carb is faster.

I didn't believe Harry's 95 HP so I looked around on the web. Impossible to find any real HP numbers. Douchers on the internet say that Indy 500's have 95 to 100 HP. Bullshit. I just find it hard to believe that a piston port motor with roundslide carbs, no exhaust valves, and a y-pipe that's about an inch in diameter could make 95 HP.

The xlt 580 made around 90hp so I dont think Harry is too far off.

Maybe DCUBA needs to look into getting a dyno.

Harry, the XLT is a triple. Did the XLT make that much with a single pipe? If the 580 Cat made 95 HP, it was an awesome overachiever. When they made a case reed 600 with powervalves a few years later, it was a horrible underachiever since they only added 16 HP to that number.

I was just doing a little research on arcticchat and some other forum and the consensus on the threads I found was the 580 efi put out 95-100 hp. Couldn't find any real info on the carbed model without actually putting effort into it and that isn't going to happen before noon.

The most convincing info I found was that they came out with a case reed induction motor in some models in '97 and '98. They claimed 90 for the 500, and 100 for the 600 in that motor. I did find the 95 HP post on Arctic Chat, but I read the whole thread and I'm taking that with a grain of salt. I could easily post on Slednutz that my 600 VES has 142 HP and people would believe it (unless they like Cat or Doo.)

We better get a dyno.... I'm going to sabotage my 600 again to get it back down to 48 psi compression. I want to see what kind of HP I was making then. I want to see Cornfedd's sled on the dyno too. With that clutching he's got, I would think his track horsepower would be astronomical.

I'll have it back together in awhile. Why don't you come over and we'll put some miles on it? Show California Sledfreak how it's done? Well, that's not possible because after yesterday's all day snowfall, it's getting pretty deep in my yard. No grassdragging over on the eastside!

Well it's obvious I'm still on the internet and not putting a sled together, but you've got nothing better to do than sit around in my garage while I finish it. You can polish up the clutches while I get the carbs back on.

The XLT 580 made 89 hp it's first year. After that it varied a little from year to year. The XCR 580 made slightly more.

115 hp at the crank. 25 track hp. This thing has been heavily modded for his ultra agressive buffet style. Most of the energy is funnelled to the Hot Dogger ensuring that this dude's Hot Pockets are perfect every time.

The XLT is a single pipe. The monoblock never came factory triple piped. It was the case reed XCR 600's that came with the pipes.

There are 2 XCR 600's - the Aggressive chassis ultra-based 600 (trip pipes) and the Wedge chassis XLT monoblock 580 (single pipe). What's even more confusing is they made both in 96.

I thought it was a 597 in 1996? For the monoblock that is.

Nevermind, your right. The XLT's were 597's and the xcr was a 580.

Actually

http://polarisman.com/site/DisplayMo...YXLT&Year=1996

Why would they put the 580 in the XCR and the 597 in the XLT?
