Default Cooke between Christmas and NewYears?

I plan to close the shop again the week between Christmas and New Years. Last year a group met in the Yoop to do some riding, this year I'd like to go west that week. I'm not at all against going back to the Snowies but it would also be cool to experience something different. A couple of us have discussed Cooke so I'm throwing it out there. That is a busy week for snowmobilers so I figure I better get some reservations thrown down soon. I guess I'd like to get a head count of who'd like to go and get their opinion on where to go. Ideally I'd like to get a place reserved before July so I know we're set in stone.

Now if we went to Cooke I've been told to stay here..... http://www.cookecityantlerslodge.com/index.html
If this were the case looks like I'd be traveling a route through Chitown and to I90 through Minnesota or I80, there are options for different members that want to go.

I'd have room to haul 4-5 sleds and gear besides mine, though my cab may get uncomfortable with 5-6 people.

Well, what you foos think?

We usually stay at the Days Inn right in West Yellowstone, we may have gotten the manager's daughter drunk on night, so we're well known there. Others stay at the Stagecoach which is probably a little nicer, and right around the same price. I think our room is $50 a night at the Days and it's $55 at the Stagecoach, but you get a free breakfast at the Days, but the Stage has a bar in it, so it's a horse a piece. They are within walking distance of each other...

I might be able to do something around then. I won't set anything in stone though. Although me schedule is wide open in the winter, I like my travel plans to be very limited because of the fluid nature of snow conditions and my own ambition. I also might be a little leery of a destination-type snowmobiling area on that week. I HATE tracked snow.

If I'd have said Snowies would I have gotten more responses? lol I'm not against Snowies. I just know that's a busy weekend for sledding and want to get something reserved. All I know for 100% sure is I'll be riding that week. I'd rather go west, but I guess I'd go to the Yoop if thats all everyone wants to do. I was thinking big snow though, and I remember last December in the Yoop.

The reality of it is that no matter where you choose you are going to have to monitor snow conditions when it get's closer and make a final decision. I have been in the Snowies that time of year with marginal conditions and you remember we bailed on Tog a couple of years ago because conditions sucked. The flip side is that conditions have been awesome in early December out west also.

I'm probably in for this trip but gotta check with work... I'm not sure if I already have the week before Christmas or the week of Christmas off. Lets figure out a location (I'd love to go back to Cooke and DON'T want to do the Snowies this trip), dates, who is going etc and book the bitch. If we stay at Cooke we have to stay at Antlers Lodge.. trust me.

Good man, I thought you'd be on it. I'll see how this thread plays out but I'd like to get something booked in the next few weeks.

Snow conditions are everything. I rode Cooke in November 2007 and it was bottomless pow. It was great to be the only ones in town then.. except when we came in late because of a break down they almost sent out search and rescue because they knew the only group in down didn't make it in before dark LOL.

I've been texting Jay about this and he threw out Rabbit Ears Pass as an option?

Do you want to trailer back and forth to the pass each day?

NO, I'm just saying he mentioned Rabbit Ears as an option. I didn't realize that would mean trailering every day. I'd prefer somewhere we can ride from hotel/cabin.

I wouldn't think you would need reservations yet, xmas week is really the start to the sledding season. When we were in west the week before xmas last year, there were about 10 other groups out there and everything was untracked. Though it does get busier after xmas snow can be marginal that early at any of the places.

If you guys haven't been to Togwotee, it is a great place, little spendy, but I enjoyed each one of my times there. I've gotten to enjoy staying in Yellowstone because the snow is great, but there is a little more variety of stuff to do at night and there are actually a few people around. I think next trip we're going to spend a night in Bozeman to see what the local greenies are like...

Dont want this thread getting forgotten. I haven't booked anything yet and it sounds like there is only little interest. I'm thinking about just booking 1 cabin in the snowies and going out with 3-4 guys as a group? Even if it were just Slanteye, Jay, and myself I think it would be a sweet trip.

The Snowies are definitely work since they are the closest. I'm thinking either stay at Ten Mile Inn or Albany Lodge. Both have food, gas, and you can ride from them.

I dont know if I can make a trip that early, but its possible. The cool thing about staying at ten mile, is you can also trailer and ride the sierra madres. That is the mountain range directly to the west of the snowies. I have not done it yet, but I hear the Madres is preferred to the snowies by a lot of the locals, and it sees far less traffic.

Interesting... I take it this is the other side of the Snowies, closer to where we went to ride last year? How much more time would this add to the ride in the truck?

Hmmm, Ten Mile sounds tasty... I think it is an extra hour or 50 miles.
