It is only the beginning of January and there have already been 17 people killed in avalanches. The average per year is 25... be safe.

Saw on the news last night and they said Colorado is about normal for the amount of slides. Just seems like more since more people are getting caught in the slides this year.

Can't echo the above comments enough:

On last Saturday, three snowmobilers died in Cottonwood Creek southeast of Afton, WY when a large, naturally released avalanche overwhelmed them in the run-out zone.

As I understand it, all 3 were prepared, experienced riders. Just a case of the wrong place at the wrong time. Please ride safe - ride smart.
